Ryan Griffin
Ryan Griffin
29-Year-Old QuarterbackQB
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
2019 Fantasy Outlook
Six years into his NFL career, Griffin has yet to throw his first regular-season pass. The 29-year-old actually served as the No. 2 quarterback on both the front and back ends of the 2018 campaign, yet game action still eluded him. Griffin enters 2019 with his best chance yet to open the season as the primary backup to Jameis Winston, needing to only beat out journeyman Blaine Gabbert this summer for that distinction. Gabbert may have the upper hand when it comes to experience in coach Bruce Arians' offensive system, having operated under it for one season in 2017 with the Cardinals. Whether that will be enough to hold off Griffin remains to be seen, with the question set to be definitively answered in training camp and the preseason. However, even if Griffin does secure the No. 2 role, it would almost assuredly take an injury to Jameis Winston for him to see any meaningful playing time. Read Past Outlooks

Set for offseason competition

Griffin will compete for Tampa Bay's backup quarterback role after the team signed fellow quarterback Blaine Gabbert on Monday, Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
ANALYSIS
Griffin served as Tampa's third quarterback for the vast majority of the 2018 campaign, eventually bumping ahead of Ryan Fitzpatrick for the No. 2 spot over the final two weeks. Given that Griffin hasn't attempted a pass in a regular-season game, Gabbert certainly will push him for the backup job.

Griffin went undrafted in 2014 and still hasn't made an appearance in an NFL regular-season game, but he could have a nice opportunity with Tampa Bay this season, as Jameis Winston will serve a suspension Weeks 1-3. While Ryan Fitzpatrick is a clear favorite to fill in as the starter, Griffin might be able to make a push for the job if he impresses during training camp and the preseason.
Griffin served as the understudy to Jameis Winston and Mike Glennon over the last two seasons, but did nothing more than hold a clipboard in either campaign. However, the 27-year-old was retained on an RFA tender of $1.8 million for 2017 and was also kept on the active roster throughout the 2016 season so as to avoid a possible poaching by another team off the practice squad. Heading into the offseason, there was a strong probability that Griffin would be moving up a slot on the depth chart come free agency due to Glennon's expected departure, a development that indeed came to pass. However, the mid-May signing of veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick presumably knocks Griffin back down a notch for the time being. He'll do battle with undrafted free agent Sefo Liufau in training camp and the preseason, although Griffin's considerable experience with coach Dirk Koetter's playbook should give him the leg up heading into the job battle.
After a two-year stint on the Saints practice squad, Griffin made a lateral move to the Bucs upon his release by New Orleans in last September's final cuts. He's yet to see action in a regular-season game during his three NFL seasons, but would presumably vault into the No. 2 role were current primary backup Mike Glennon to be traded. He brings some pedigree from a prolific college career at Tulane, where he threw for 9,026 yards, 56 touchdowns and 35 interceptions over four seasons, and set the school's single-game passing record with 476 yards against Rice in his senior campaign.
Griffin is expected to compete with Luke McCown to be Drew Brees' primary backup quarterback in New Orleans.
Griffin will look for a No. 2 or 3 quarterback gig with another team after he was waived by the Saints at the conclusion of training camp.
Griffin will compete for a roster spot as the Saints' likely third-string quarterback behind starter Drew Brees and either Seneca Wallace or Luke McCown.
