2025 Fantasy Outlook
The 49ers signed Jones to serve as the team's backup after passing on the prospect early in the 2021 NFL Draft. San Francisco didn't appear to miss much from the Alabama product after he threw 54 touchdowns to 44 interceptions in his first four years as a pro. Jones hopes to follow in the path of fellow failed prospect Sam Darnold, who flipped his opportunity as Brock Purdy's backup in 2023 into a career renaissance the following year after linking up with QB guru Kyle Shanahan. Past knee injury
Jones (knee) was a full participant in Wednesday's practice, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
ANALYSIS
Jones missed the 49ers' preseason finale due to a knee sprain, but his full participation in Wednesday's practice indicates it is no longer an issue. The 2021 first-rounder is slated to begin the season as the 49ers' backup quarterback behind Brock Purdy. Jones had the same role in Jacksonville last year behind Trevor Lawrence, but the former appeared in 10 regular-season games (seven starts) and completed 65.3 percent of his passes for 1,672 yards, eight touchdowns and eight interceptions while rushing for 92 yards and one score on 28 carries.

The 15th overall draft pick in 2021, Jones played his way out of New England after failing to progress from his somewhat promising rookie season. His average target depth (6.9) and YPA (6.1) were both bottom 5 in the league last year, and his interception rate (3.5 percent) was the highest. By Week 13 he had lost the starting job and by season’s end he had been demoted to third string. The Patriots traded him to Jacksonville in March where he will back up Trevor Lawrence. If Jones sees the field, he will at least have a talented supporting cast, but the lack of arm strength, athleticism and mobility caps his value, even in two-QB leagues.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
In good spot with 49ers
Jones is set to work with the best "offensive infrastructure" of his NFL career in San Francisco, Bill Barnwell of ESPN.com opines.
ANALYSIS
In listing the players who went to new teams this offseason that are better off in their new locations, Barnwell highlights Jones' case as one prominent example and suggests the 2021 first-round pick of the Patriots could benefit from being on the 49ers roster in much the same way Sam Darnold did in 2023. With access to Kyle Shanahan and his staff, Jones could get just the type of early career reset he needs to go on and fulfill the potential he showed as a rookie elsewhere in coming years.
