The Preview

As if the back nine at the Waste Management Phoenix Open isn't energizing enough, viewers were treated to yet another playoff as the attention shifted from Super Bowl pregame shows to a duel between Chez Reavie and Gary Woodland. Luckily, it didn't take long for Woodland to come out on top for his first win since 2013, while Reavie faltered with a bogey on the first playoff hole. This week on Tour, five of the Official World Golf Ranking's top-10 will be on display at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, which also features several famous amateurs including Aaron Rodgers, Wayne Gretzky and Tony Romo. The pros in the field will be guaranteed three rounds before a 54-hole cut advances the top-60 and ties. Strategically, selecting a somewhat riskier lineup than usual could pay dividends. In addition to the usual key statistics involving quality ball striking, pay extra attention to the better putters in the field along with par-five scoring. The weather forecast includes sunny skies for a majority of the tournament, with winds slightly picking up Saturday afternoon.

Cream of the Crop

Dustin Johnson - $17,200

Leading the PGA Tour in SG: Tee-to-Green, birdie or better percentage and scoring average, Johnson also ranks top-20 in terms of SG: Putting as he remains in the No. 1 spot of the OWGR. He's also one of the horses for the course this week, having claimed victories at both the 2009 and 2010 editions of this tournament. Additionally, Johnson has finished top-five in three out of his last four appearances at the event. He enters with strong form after a T9 at the Euro Tour's Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship followed his win at the Sentry Tournament of Champions.

Jason Day - $16,400

Day made his first appearance on the PGA Tour since late October a couple weeks back at the Farmers Insurance Open, where he defeated Alex Noren in a six-hole playoff to secure a win for the first time since 2016. There are still concerns surrounding his lack of full health, as the world's 10th-ranked player has cited back issues that have impacted his play. He could be worth the risk at Pebble Beach, where he's finished no worse than 11th while notching a pair of top-fives throughout the past three years.

Jordan Spieth - $16,000

The main concern for this event's defending champ (by four strokes) will be his putter, as Spieth ranks a dismal 195th out of 206 in SG: Putting on Tour this season. Despite recent putting struggles along with a missed cut at last week's Waste Management Phoenix Open, it's tough to fade Spieth at Pebble Beach. In five career appearances at the Pro-Am, he's finished no worse than a T22 while posting a trio of top-seven performances. Spieth also leads the Tour in GIR percentage at a clip of just under 82 percent.

Glue Guys

Kevin Kisner - $14,400

Kisner, who finished T10 at last year's Pebble Beach Pro-Am, hasn't missed a cut since the 2017 Greenbrier Classic in early July. Statistically he also matches up well with this venue, as he currently ranks third on Tour in SG: Putting, 20th in GIR percentage, ninth in birdie or better percentage and 32nd in par-five scoring average.

Chesson Hadley - $14,300

Hadley is earning additional awareness from the daily fantasy golf community after grabbing his fourth top-five finish of the season at last week's WMPO, where he ranked fifth in SG: Approach, fourth in SG: T2G and eighth in putts per GIR. He's up to 14th in the FedExCup standings and owns a decent track record at this event, finishing T10 in both 2014 and 2015. It wouldn't be a shock to see Hadley more heavily owned than usual, especially given the fact there are only five players priced in the $14,000s.

Chez Reavie - $14,200

Reavie has become one of the more consistent players on Tour since the beginning of last summer, as the 36-year-old hasn't missed a single cut in 19 consecutive starts dating back to a T48 at the Dean & Deluca Invitational in May. Despite this impressive streak and a runner-up finish at last week's Waste Management Phoenix Open, Reavie remains moderately priced. This is likely due to an underwhelming track record at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, but keep in mind that he had missed three straight cuts at the WMPO before nearly winning the event last week.

Bargain Bin

Rafael Cabrera-Bello - $13,800

At No. 21 in the OWGR, Cabrera-Bello certainly feels underpriced, especially given his solid recent form. He most recently finished T6 at the European Tour's Omega Dubai Desert Classic, while a T42 at the Nedbank Golf Challenge marks Cabrera-Bello's worst result in his last 10 starts. The best part of his game could be the putter, having ranked 14th on the PGA Tour in SG: Putting during the 2016-17 season.

Beau Hossler - $13,400

Hossler will be teeing it up for the fifth consecutive week on Tour, but the 22-year-old wasn't bothered by fatigue at the WMPO, racking up his fourth top-20 of the season and third straight top-35. At TPC Scottsdale, the former Longhorn ranked sixth among the field in SG: Putting as he moved up to 32nd on Tour in that category this season.
