This Week's Texas Open

Masters Preparation II - The final warm-up.

The winner of the Texas Open, if not already qualified, will be the last Masters PGA Tour entry. Plenty of golfers are tuning up for next week, others are shooting for the win that buys a ticket to Augusta.

The full field includes Official World Golf Rank (OWGR) players: No. 2 Rory McIlroy, No. 9 Matt Kuchar, No. 12 Ian Poulter, No. 15 Charl Schwartzel, No. 22 Peter Hanson, No. 27 Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano, No. 33 Jamie Donaldson, No. 42 George Coetzee and No. 46 Freddie Jacobson.

The Texas Open goes back to 1922, attracting the leading players of their era. Wins for a few: Ben Hogan, Sam Snead (2), Arnold Palmer (3 consecutive) Ben Crenshaw (2) Justin Leonard* (3) and Zack Johnson (2 consecutive).

LaCantera Golf Club played host to the event starting in 1995 offering 72 holes after 17 years of par-70 and par-71 courses. The new TPC San Antonio (par-72 AT&T Oaks Course), designed by Pete Dye and Greg Norman, took over in 2010.

In 2003 at the par-70 LaCantera, Tommy Armour III, shot a 64-62-63-65, establishing the lowest 72-hole score, 26-under 254, which still stands.

TPC San Antonio ranked as the fourth-toughest course on the PGA Tour in 2012.

Round 2: 7-under 65, Cameron Tringale* (T9), John Huh* (T2)
Round 3: 5-under 67, Matt Kuchar* (T14), John Huh (T2)
Round 4: 6-under 66, Jerry Kelly* (T18), David Hearn (T10)

As seen by the numbers, this is a very difficult course that measures up to the toughest. However, going low is still alive here. Unless the course set-up is drastically softened, one can expect tough scores, especially if wind comes. This course demands experience and patience plus good driving distance, excellent driving accuracy, GIR, scrambling and putting - the Holy Grail of scoring. Set your roster carefully.
