JJ Peterka

JJ Peterka

23-Year-Old Right WingRW
Utah Mammoth
2025 Fantasy Outlook
Peterka emerged as one of the Sabres' top scorers, supplying 27 goals and 68 points in 77 outings last season. That's up from 50 points (28 goals) in 2023-24 and 32 points (12 goals) in 2022-23. Part of that surge has come from Peterka's expanded role. He averaged 18:11 of ice time last campaign, up from 16:24 in 2023-24, and that increase included a career-high 2:55 with the man advantage, en route to 18 power-play points. However, his shots on goal dropped from 226 in 2023-24 to 173 last year, and a more aggressive campaign in that category could push him above the 30-goal milestone. He also didn't have much stability at even strength, because while he got ample minutes, he lacked consistent linemates last season. His fantasy upside should improve after a trade to the Mammoth, where he should have steady top-six minutes and power-play time. Read Past Outlooks

Peterka was traded to the Mammoth from the Sabres on Wednesday in exchange for Josh Doan and Michael Kesselring, Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reports. Per Cole Bagley of KSL Sports, Peterka will also sign a five-year, $38.5 million contract with the Mammoth.
ANALYSIS
Peterka is the best player in the deal right now, and he brings an instant boost to the Mammoth's top six and power play. The winger broke out with 68 points in 77 games last season in his third full NHL campaign with the Sabres. Peterka can play on either wing, but it's unclear if he'll slot onto the first line or the second line to begin his time with the Mammoth. In terms of production, this should be a roughly lateral move for the 23-year-old. The extension comes in at a $7.7 million cap hit, which cements Peterka's status as a core forward for Utah for the remainder of the decade.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2024
2023
Peterka showcased plenty of potential in 2023-24 by scoring 28 goals and recording 50 points in 82 games. He also jumped from 1.62 shots per game in 2022-23 to 2.76. He only picked up three goals and four assists on the power play, which should improve in the upcoming campaign. The buyout of Jeff Skinner during the offseason will open opportunities for others, and Peterka is a prime candidate to fill the void on the top line and first power-play unit. The 22-year-old Peterka averaged 20:26 of ice time in his final 13 outings, collecting seven goals, 46 shots on net and two assists during that span. He likely won't contribute much to hits or blocks totals, but as a high-volume shooter likely to take on increased roles, he has tremendous upside as a value target for fantasy managers.
After getting a brief taste of the NHL in 2021-22, Peterka put forth a solid rookie campaign last season, contributing 12 goals, 32 points and 125 shots in 77 contests while averaging 13:39 of ice time. The 21-year-old forward was selected with the No. 34 overall pick in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft and possesses a fair amount of offensive upside. The main issue is that Buffalo has plenty of talented young forwards, so Peterka might struggle to get a significantly bigger role than he had in 2022-23. That said, there is a greater opportunity for him to earn a top-six spot out of the gate after Jack Quinn underwent surgery for an Achilles injury that's projected to cost him roughly the first month of the season. If Peterka can take advantage of that opportunity, perhaps he can hang onto the spot and build towards a 50-point campaign, though there's also the real risk that he'll struggle to get out of a third-line role in his sophomore season and end up with offensive numbers largely mirroring his rookie showing.

June 25, 2025
The Sabres have a deal in place to send Peterka to the Mammoth, Cole Bagley of KSL Sports reports.
ANALYSIS
Peterka's name has been floating in rumors for months, but this is as close as it's gotten for a deal. Should the deal go through, Utah would be getting a 23-year-old winger coming off his third full campaign. Peterka had 27 goals and 68 points in 2024-25, though his overall game still needs some work.
