Nicholas Robertson

Nicholas Robertson

25-Year-Old Left WingLW
Pittsburgh Penguins
2026 Fantasy Outlook
Robertson has occasionally gone on stretches while he's looked like a solid top-six forward, but with 234 career regular-season NHL games now in the books, he still hasn't shown that he can perform at that level reliably. He completed 2025-26 with 16 goals and 32 points in 78 appearances, and even those somewhat modest totals represented career highs for him. It doesn't help that he's averaged just 11:52 of ice time in his career, including 12:40 last season, but he also failed to force the Maple Leafs to give him a bigger role. He figures to get a shot to earn more responsibility after he was traded to the Penguins this offseason. He'll turn 25 years old before the start of the 2026-27 campaign, so he's not so old that he can't reach another level, but he's also not a true prospect anymore. Pencil him in for 25-35 points with the knowledge that the potential to do more is still there. Read Past Outlooks

Tallies in loss
LWPittsburgh Penguins
October 7, 2026
Robertson scored a goal and logged two PIM in Wednesday's 5-3 loss to the Capitals.
ANALYSIS
Robertson opened the season in a more prominent role, but Bryan Rust's (upper body) return caused a roster shuffle. Robertson bumped down to the fourth line in Wednesday's contest. With three goals over four contests, Robertson has done his part so far. He has added seven shots on net, two blocked shots, four PIM and a plus-3 rating. The 25-year-old may move around the lineup, depending on how the Penguins' lines shake out through the campaign.

Robertson produced 15 goals and 22 points across 69 regular-season appearances in 2024-25 before adding one goal and one assist in three playoff outings. He sat frequently as a healthy scratch and averaged only 12:00 of ice time per game in the regular season. Robertson may need a change of scenery to be a factor in fantasy leagues. He has offensive potential but hasn’t locked down a full-time spot in the lineup, and he will need a top-six role to be a worthwhile depth option in most formats, a spot that is unlikely to be regularly available in Toronto.
Given a chance to stick in the Maple Leafs' lineup for a while, Robertson did fine with 27 points and 96 shots on goal in 56 regular-season contests. He'll play all of 2024-25 at the age of 23, which still lends some optimism that we haven't seen Robertson's top gear. Unfortunately, it'll be difficult for him to reach the next level if he continues to see bottom-six minutes -- he averaged just 11:23 of ice time last season. Robertson's youth is a plus, but he'll need to work his way into a regular top-six role to make sustainable gains on offense. Keep an eye on him in training camp, as a strong showing there could make him a popular sleeper pick in drafts scheduled closer to the start of the campaign.
Robertson played just 15 games for Toronto a season ago (two goals, five points) and none after early December. It was announced in mid-January he underwent shoulder surgery which wiped out the rest of his year. Set to turn 22 just prior to the start of training camp, Robertson has seemed like a prime change-of-scenery candidate for a couple seasons now and nothing has changed on that front. The shoulder issue came with a six-month recovery period, so Robertson shouldn't be at risk of missing any time in 2023-24, but he's almost certainly going to start the campaign in the AHL.
Robertson's ascension over the 2019-20 season was nothing short of amazing. Drafted 53rd overall in the 2019 Draft, he scored 55 goals (86 points) in just 43 games with the OHL Peterborough Petes and was invited to the Leafs' return-to-play training camp. Robertson then dressed in four games against Columbus in the qualifying round and didn't look out of place -- he even drove play when he was on the ice and scored his first goal. His release is a rocket and he's like a dog on a bone in puck pursuit. The kid is a second-round steal and could break camp this season on the third line. Robertson will be in the top six in a few short years.

Arbitration hearing set
LWPittsburgh Penguins
July 13, 2026
Robertson will have his salary arbitration hearing July 28, Dave Molinari of Pittsburgh Hockey Now reports Monday.
ANALYSIS
Robertson and the Penguins still have over two weeks to work out a new salary agreement after the team acquired him from Toronto on July 1. The 24-year-old winger is coming off a career year in which he set new personal bests in both goals and assists with 16 apiece. If the California native can find a more consistent role with the Pens' power play, he could top those numbers in 2026-27.
