John Phillips
The Welsh Wrecking Machine

Quick day at the office
September 29, 2019
Phillips defeated Alen Amedovski via KO (punches) at 0:17 of Round 1 at UFC Copenhagen on Saturday.
Both men came out swinging with little regard for defense, and it was Phillips that landed first, registering the third-fastest knockout in UFC middleweight history. This fight didn't show us much about the future prospects for Phillips, but it snapped a three-fight losing streak, earned him a $50,000 Performance of the Night bonus and likely bought him at least one more fight with the company.

New opponent booked
July 16, 2019
Phillips will take on Alen Amedovski in a middleweight matchup at UFC Copenhagen on Sept. 28.
Phillips was scheduled to face Karl Roberson last weekend on the Sacramento card, but was forced to withdraw late due to undisclosed reasons. He'll now get what could be his final shot with the company, facing an 0-1 fighter in Amendovski that dropped his debut to Krzystof Jotko in April. Phillips entered the UFC with a 21-6 pro record, but has dropped each of his three fights to date. While his last matchup -- a split decision loss to Jack Marshman -- was a slightly better performance, Phillips has yet to record a takedown in the UFC, while absorbing nearly double the amount of significant strikes he has landed. This overseas matchup could be the 34-year-old's final opportunity to show he deserves a roster spot.
Set for UFC Sacramento
May 10, 2019
Phillips will square off against Karl Roberson at UFC Sacramento on July 13, Nolan King of Flocombat reports.
Despite a good amount of success while climbing up the promotion ladder, Phillips has yet to record a victory in three bouts with the UFC. His most recent loss was the closest he's gotten to experiencing just that, losing in a split decision to Jack Marshman at UFC Fight Night in London during mid-March. Roberson comes into the bout having lost two of his last three as well, so Phillips should have a shot at earning that elusive win.
Drops lackluster decision
March 16, 2019
Phillips lost to Jack Marshman via split decision (28-29, 29-28, 28-29) at UFC Fight Night in London on Saturday.
Phillips appeared content to absorb strikes in exchange for landing his own, but both men got their fair share of offense off in the first round. Just past the midway point, Phillips dropped Marshman with a clean right hook, but mysteriously let him off the hook by allowing him to stand up instead of pouncing for the finish. Marshman quickly regained his senses and returned fire, with the rest of the first being a back-and-forth affair. Phillips resumed Octagon control in the second round, but there wasn't much action overall in that period. It took until approximately the final 30 seconds of the third round for both men to empty the tank and start swinging. The pair of Welshmen tried to egg each other on towards the end, but more words than strikes were thrown. It was a disappointing result that won't do a whole lot for the stock of either fighter.
Opponent misses weight
March 15, 2019
Phillips will still face Jack Marshman at UFC London on Saturday despite Marshman missing weight by two pounds, freelance MMA journalist Simon Head reports.
Phillips is coming off two straight losses and appears to be the underdog heading into Saturday. There's a slight glimmer of hope that Marshman might not be properly prepared for the fight, as evidenced by his inability to make weight, but that might still be wishful thinking for Phillips.
Booked for London card
December 19, 2018
Phillips will face off against Jack Marshman on March 16 at UFC London.
Phillips has dropped his first two fights in the promotion after signing with the UFC in December of 2016. "The Welsh Wrecking Machine" badly needs a victory to have any chance of lasting in the UFC. Most recently, he was defeated by Kevin Holland via submission (rear-naked choke) at UFC Fight Night 141 in China last month. On the flip side, Marshman lost his previous fight to Karl Roberson and comes in with a career record of 22-8.
