John Phillips
Drops lackluster decision
MiddleweightUFC
March 16, 2019
Phillips lost to Jack Marshman via split decision (28-29, 29-28, 28-29) at UFC Fight Night in London on Saturday.
ANALYSIS
Phillips appeared content to absorb strikes in exchange for landing his own, but both men got their fair share of offense off in the first round. Just past the midway point, Phillips dropped Marshman with a clean right hook, but mysteriously let him off the hook by allowing him to stand up instead of pouncing for the finish. Marshman quickly regained his senses and returned fire, with the rest of the first being a back-and-forth affair. Phillips resumed Octagon control in the second round, but there wasn't much action overall in that period. It took until approximately the final 30 seconds of the third round for both men to empty the tank and start swinging. The pair of Welshmen tried to egg each other on towards the end, but more words than strikes were thrown. It was a disappointing result that won't do a whole lot for the stock of either fighter.

Opponent misses weight
MiddleweightUFC
March 15, 2019
Phillips will still face Jack Marshman at UFC London on Saturday despite Marshman missing weight by two pounds, freelance MMA journalist Simon Head reports.
ANALYSIS
Phillips is coming off two straight losses and appears to be the underdog heading into Saturday. There's a slight glimmer of hope that Marshman might not be properly prepared for the fight, as evidenced by his inability to make weight, but that might still be wishful thinking for Phillips.
Booked for London card
MiddleweightUFC
December 19, 2018
Phillips will face off against Jack Marshman on March 16 at UFC London.
ANALYSIS
Phillips has dropped his first two fights in the promotion after signing with the UFC in December of 2016. "The Welsh Wrecking Machine" badly needs a victory to have any chance of lasting in the UFC. Most recently, he was defeated by Kevin Holland via submission (rear-naked choke) at UFC Fight Night 141 in China last month. On the flip side, Marshman lost his previous fight to Karl Roberson and comes in with a career record of 22-8.
Can't land his power strikes
MiddleweightUFC
November 24, 2018
Phillips lost to Kevin Holland via submission (rear-naked choke) at 4:05 of Round 3 at UFC Fight Night 141 on Saturday in Beijing, China.
ANALYSIS
Phillips really struggled to close the distance in this fight. Holland used his reach very well and continually scored with body kicks and straight punches. On the rare occasions where Phillips was able to get inside, he scored with power strikes. However, it was not enough to take the fight on the cards. In the third round, he got stuck on the ground and eventually submitted. It looks like he got to the UFC with just power punches, and that is not enough to win fights at this level.
Loses in Round 1 via rear-naked choke

March 17, 2018
Philips was defeated by Charles Byrd via submission (rear-naked choke) at 3:58 of Round 1 at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in London.
ANALYSIS
Phillips is a known power puncher, so Byrd took him down seconds into the fight. Phillips could not manage to get back to his feet, absorbed some punches, and eventually gave up his back. He did a good job fighting the choke, but eventually Byrd tightened it up and forced the tap.
To debut against Eryk Anders at UFC Fresno
MiddleweightUFC
September 28, 2017
Phillips will face Eryk Anders in a middleweight bout at UFC Fight Night 123 on December 9 in Fresno, Peter Carroll of MMAFighting.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Phillips signed with the UFC back in December but won't make his promotional debut until a year later. He was set to face Marcos Rogerio de Lima this year but the fight was cancelled due to visa issues. The long-awaited debut of the Welsh stand-up artist will finally come to fruition against Anders. Phillips has 18 knockouts in his career, four of which have led to a winning streak that dates back to 2015. The 32-year-old's most recent loss was to Jesse Taylor in 2013.
