Can't overcome slow start
July 20, 2019
Pilarte lost to Felipe Colares via split decision (28-29, 29-28, 28-29) at UFC San Antonio on Saturday.
An injury delayed Pilarte's debut after he earned a contract via the Contender Series in July of 2018, and the long layoff may have played a role here. The card's biggest betting favorite started slow, absorbing several kicks early, including an array of knees while up against the fence. Roughly midway through the first, Pilarte was taken down and forced to eat heavy ground-and-pound, which likely led to him dropping that frame. He spent the early part of the second with his back against the cage, but held on to an underhook that allowed him to work some of his jiu-jitsu. With less than two minutes left in the second, he landed a hard knee and started to take control of the striking, but still ended up finishing the round on his back after multiple transitions and kimura attempts. Heading into the third and likely needing a finish, Pilarte took an immediate shot to the groin following the opening bell. After regrouping, he backed Colares up against the fence, took his back and dragged him to the mat in search of a submission. He spent the entirety of the last frame in dominant position looking for the rear-naked choke, but Colares was able to survive. It was ultimately too little, too late for the 29-year-old, who will go back to the drawing board with a 8-2 professional record.
To make UFC debut in San Antonio
May 17, 2019
Pilarte will take on Felipe Colares in a bantamweight matchup at UFC San Antonio on July 20, Alexander K. Lee of reports.
Pilarte owns a 8-1 professional record, but will now get a chance to make his UFC debut after he put Vince Morales to sleep via rear-naked choke on Dana White's Contender Series last summer. He'll face off against a fighter in Colares who has the exact same professional record, but Pilarte will enter with distinct height and reach advantages. Takedown defense will be key for Pilarte, as even in a loss, Colares recorded three takedowns in his UFC debut. On the other hand, Pilarte does have four submission wins on his record, so he's plenty capable in grappling exchanges, if needed.
Subs Vince Morales, earns UFC contract
July 20, 2018
Pilarte defeated Vince Morales via technical submission (rear-naked choke) at 1:52 of Round 2 at Dana White's Tuesday Night Contender Series, earning a UFC contract with the victory.
Pilarte entered this fight as a (+230) betting underdog, and he ended up taking a major beating before securing the comeback victory. He was able to withstand an early onslaught from Morales and barely made it out of the first round. The second round was looking like more of the same, but Pilarte caught a kick and used it to take Morales to the canvas. From there, Pilarte showed off his jiu-jitsu be securing the rear-naked choke that ultimately put Morales to sleep. Pilarte did have to be taken to the hospital following the event, so his official UFC debut may take some time. Outside of his toughness and grappling ability, one of Pilarte's best traits is his frame, as standing a 6-0 with a 74-inch reach should give him a size advantage over just about any bantamweight opponent.
