Leans on grappling to beat RDA
LightweightUFC
March 9, 2024
Gamrot defeated Rafael dos Anjos via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 30-27) at UFC 299 on Saturday in Miami.
ANALYSIS
It was a clear cut decision win for Gamrot, but it still felt like an underwhelming effort given he entered as a -450 favorite, largest on the entire card. Gamrot got blasted on the feet the first couple minutes, but once he got his wrestling game going, RDA was toast. All told, Mateusz landed 11-of-19 takedown attempts, good for 7:01 worth of control time. Gamrot is 7-1 in his past eight fights, with his lone setback during that stretch being a unanimous decision defeat to Beneil Dariush back in October 2022. He's really good, but it's plenty fair to wonder what his backup plan will be in the fights in which those takedowns aren't landing. We haven't seen a ton in the way of secondary offense from him thus far.

Scheduled against former champ
LightweightUFC
December 12, 2023
Gamrot is scheduled to face Rafael dos Anjos in a lightweight fight at UFC 299 on March 9 in Miami, Marcel Dorff of Eurosport.nl reports.
ANALYSIS
Gamrot was unable to participate in the main event of UFC 294. For his next fight, he will face off against a former UFC Lightweight Champion though. Dos Anjos was champion in the mid-2010s and has continued to be a legitimate threat in multiple divisions since then. Gamrot will look to fend off RDA and improve his winning streak to three.
Backup for title fight
LightweightUFC
October 8, 2023
Gamrot will serve as the backup fighter for UFC 294's main event in Abu Dhabi on Oct. 21, MMAJunkie.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Currently, Islam Makhachev is scheduled to defend the UFC Lightweight Championship against Charles Oliveira for UFC 294's main event. But should either be unavailable, Gamrot will receive a shot at gold. He earned the backup opportunity after defeating Rafael Fiziev via TKO (injury) at UFC Vegas 80 on Sept. 23.
Opponent injury leads to win
LightweightUFC
September 23, 2023
Gamrot defeated Rafael Fiziev via TKO (injury) at 2:03 of Round 2 at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
It will come with an asterisk attached, but it's by far the biggest win of Gamrot's career to date. He dropped the opening round on all three scorecards, although it was a close, competitive frame. Gamrot appeared to finally be making some headway in Round 2 with his grappling game, at which point Fiziev suffered some sort of leg injury after attempting a kick. Regardless, it's a key victory for the 32-year-old native of Poland, as Gamrot improves to 6-1 in his past seven bouts dating back to April 2021.
Fiziev fight scheduled
LightweightUFC
July 27, 2023
Gamrot will fight Rafael Fiziev in a lightweight bout at UFC Vegas 80 on Sept. 23, according to Brett Okamoto of ESPN.com.
ANALYSIS
Gamrot and fellow top-seven lightweight Fiziev will try to establish more of their credibility with this next fight. The former defeated No. 12 Jalin Turner at UFC 285 but only by split decision. Meanwhile, Fiziev will try to bounce back after suffering defeat at the hands of Justin Gaethje back in UFC 286.
Barely gets past Jalin Turner
LightweightUFC
March 4, 2023
Gamrot defeated Jalin Turner via split decision (29-28, 28-29, 30-27) at UFC 285 on Saturday in Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
Entering as a -225 favorite, Gamrot had to work for this one. Appearing half the size of his massive opponent, Mateusz had difficulty with the length of Turner in the striking game. He left too many openings on the feet, but his elite wrestling game was once again the difference. Gamrot attempted a dozen takedowns attempts, landing a third of them. Those four successful tries resulted in 6:52 worth of control time. Gamrot's biggest moment of the fight came in the latter stages of Round 2 in which he powered Turner to the mat before getting pinning him to the mat and blitzing him with countless unanswered strikes. All in all, it was a strong rebound effort from Gamrot on the heels of his unanimous decision defeat to Beneil Dariush last October. He improves to 5-2 in his first seven UFC bouts.
