Gets judges call in debut
FeatherweightUFC
April 10, 2021
Saldana defeated Jordan Griffin via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28) at UFC on ABC 2 on Saturday in Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
It's better to be lucky than good sometimes and that saying would certainly appear to apply to Saldana in his UFC debut. Saldana was by no means embarrassed, but he appeared to drop each of the first two rounds before finding his form in Round 3. The judges disagreed, with each of them feeling he did enough to earn the call. It's rare to see a controversial decision that doesn't end in a split decision, but we got it here. Saldana earned his UFC opportunity with a knockout win over Vince Murdock on Dana White's Contender Series this past November. He has some power, but has been up and down on the regional circuit throughout the course of his career. There isn't much helium behind Saldana despite Saturday's fortunate ruling.

Finishes Murdock on Contender Series

Saldana defeated Vince Murdock via TKO (front kick) at 0:44 of Round 3 at Dana White's Contender Series. After the show, he was one of four fighters to be awarded a UFC contract.
ANALYSIS
Saldana used massive height and reach advantages to establish an early lead in the striking game over the first two rounds by employing plenty of leg kicks, but really started to turn up the heat in Round 3. A front kick dropped his opponent and he was able to finish the fight from there. Saldana is a unique fighter in the fact that he's missing most of the pointer finger on his right hand, but that hasn't stopped him from using it as a knockout weapon on the regional circuit. He did allude to possible injuries in both his right hand and foot in his post-fight interview, so it remains to be seen how soon he'll make his first official walk to the Octagon. When that day comes, it's possible fight fans see him compete in either the bantamweight or featherweight divisions.
