Volkov fight falls through
HeavyweightUFC
March 28, 2024
Almeida's scheduled heavyweight fight against Alexander Volkov at UFC 302 appears to have been scrapped, as UFC President Dana White announced Wednesday night that Volkov would instead be facing Sergei Pavlovic at UFC Saudi Arabia on June 22.
ANALYSIS
Almeida's march to a title shot was stopped in its tracks at UFC 299 when he was finished by Curtis Blaydes in the second round. Just over two weeks later, the promotion announced he would be getting a quick turnaround against Volkov at UFC 302 on June 1, but that no longer appears to be the case. Even with the loss, look for Almeida to be matched up against another ranked opponent in short order.
Booked for UFC 302
HeavyweightUFC
March 25, 2024
Almeida is slated to take on Alexander Volkov at UFC 302 on June 1, Marcel Dorff of Eurosport.nl reports.
ANALYSIS
Almeida was riding a six-fight winning streak to kick off his career with the company before losing to Curtis Blades via KO (punches) in Round 2 at UFC 299. He will look to get things back on track when he steps into the octagon with Volkov, who has come out of his last three fights victorious.
Crushed after fast start
HeavyweightUFC
March 9, 2024
Almeida lost to Curtis Blaydes via KO (punches) at 0:36 of Round 2 at UFC 299 on Saturday in Miami.
ANALYSIS
Boy, is Almeida going to be kicking himself after this one. In a matchup between two wrestlers, Jailton proved to be the superior grappler. He landed nine takedowns in Round 1 alone, good for 4:39 worth of control time. It worked so well in the opening frame that he tried for another attempt immediately at the start of Round 2. This issue this time, however, was that he ate an uppercut from Blaydes upon entry, leaving him in a prone position and allowing Curtis to rain down unanswered blows to the side of the head which knocked Almeida out cold. Jailton's physical gifts are evident, but he's 32 years of age and his best victory in seven UFC bouts (6-1) is either Derrick Lewis or Jair Rozenstruik, depending on your point of view. This was his first real test against a top-level opponent in the heavyweight division, and it didn't go well.
Scheduled against Blaydes again
HeavyweightUFC
December 12, 2023
Almeida is scheduled to compete against Curtis Blaydes in a heavyweight fight at UFC 299 on March 9, per Guilherme Cruz of MMAFighting.com.
ANALYSIS
Almeida was supposed to fight Blaydes at the UFC's Nov. 4 event. However, the latter withdrew due to multiple ankle injuries, and Almeida fought Derrick Lewis instead. Ideally for Almeida, he can fight Blaydes this time, giving him the former a chance to jump to the top five of the UFC's heavyweight contender rankings.
Underwhelming despite easy win
HeavyweightUFC
November 4, 2023
Almeida defeated Derrick Lewis via unanimous decision (50-44, 50-45, 50-45) at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
ANALYSIS
The rare fight in which neither man managed to raise their stock. Yes, the numbers were lopsided in Almeida's favor. He closed with a 120-28 edge in total strikes landed. He connected on 6-of-15 takedown attempts, good for 21:10 worth of control time, a new heavyweight record. Truly insane numbers for a 25-minute fight. Yet as Michael Bisping correctly pointed out multiple times on the broadcast, he couldn't remember the last a referee had to warn a fighter to remain active from mount. Almeida was more concerned with keeping Lewis grounded as opposed to finishing the fight. Being wary of Derrick's fight-ending power was a smart move by Jailton, but you have to try to make a statement when you are hunting for a title and Almeida absolutely did not do that here. The Brazilian is a good wrestler and very strong. We knew both of those things entering the evening. Somehow, Almeida finds himself in a more questionable spot than when the night began despite the lopsided win.
