Fight called off
March 11, 2022
Onama announced on his personal Twitter page Friday that his upcoming fight March 26 against Nate Landwehr has been called off due to Landwehr's withdrawal.
Onama was a late addition to the fight, taking it on just three weeks' notice after Lerone Murphy withdrew for undisclosed reasons. It doesn't appear as though Onama will remain on the card against a new opponent, as he wrote that he'll be back in action in May or June.
Steps in at UFC Columbus
March 5, 2022
Onama will take on Nate Landwehr in a featherweight matchup at UFC Columbus on March 26, MMAFighting.com reports.
Onama earned his first UFC win in Las Vegas on Feb. 19 when he defeated Gabriel Benitez via KO (punches) in Round 1. He'll face a quick turnaround against Landwehr after Lerone Murphy (undisclosed) withdrew from the card. Landwehr most recently fought in mid-October, when he defeated L'udovit Klein via submission (anaconda choke). Onama has an edge in height.
Scores huge KO for first UFC win
February 19, 2022
Onama defeated Gabriel Benitez via KO (punches) at 4:24 of Round 1 at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Las Vegas.
Onama picks up a huge knockout victory for his resume, in addition to pocketing 30 percent of Benitez's purse after the latter missed weight by two pounds on Friday morning. He'll also take home a $50,000 bonus as one of four Performance of the Night recipients. Onama deserves full marks for fighting through a difficult situation. He appeared to be done after eating a handful of strikes which damaged his eye midway through Round 1. Benitez pushed forward in search of the finish, but Onama recognized the trouble he was in and limited the distance between the two men on the feet. He was eventually able to recover and end the fight with some ridiculous power shots of his own. Onama needs to work on his secondary skills, but his fight-changing power is legitimate, and this was an excellent effort on the heels of a unanimous decision defeat to Mason Jones in his UFC debut this past October.
Fight still on
February 18, 2022
Onama's fight against Gabriel Benitez remains on Saturday's card, MMAFighting.com reports.
Benitez missed weight by two pounds Friday, which cast the bout in some doubt. He'll be penalized 30 percent of his purse, but the fight will go forward at a catchweight.
Opponent misses weight
February 18, 2022
Onama's opponent, Gabriel Benitez, missed weight Friday, MMAJunkie.com reports.
Benitez checked in at 148 pounds, missing the limit for non-title featherweight fights by two pounds. It's not clear if the fight will be scrapped or if it will continue, with Benitez presumably forfeiting a portion of his purse.
