Machado lost to Michael Parkin via unanimous decision (28-29, 28-29, 28-29) at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
Machado earned a UFC contract on Dana White's Contender Series this past August despite an underwhelming performance in a unanimous decision win. Thus, he entered as a hefty +300 underdog for this fight against Parkin, a bout which he may very well have deserved to win. Machado did give up three takedowns, but also closed with a 103-69 edge in total strikes landed. With the fight seemingly in the balance late, the Brazilian appeared to be the man with more energy. None of the three judges agreed. Machado is a lock to receive another fight with the company following this strong effort.

It's no secret that UFC President Dana White loves the power on display at heavyweight, which may explain how Machado left the Apex with the promise of a contract to fight in the organization. While the Brazilian was certainly the more active fighter, the winging right hands he threw before falling into clinch positions did little to damage Szafalrski, who looked as though he simply couldn't handle the aggression. We've seen fighters molded into formidable contenders with the right coaching, and Machado is young for a heavyweight, but it's difficult to view the 29-year-old as more than filler at the bottom of the division at this point.
