Pulls upset in UFC debut
Abdelwahab defeated Don'Tale Mayes via split decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28) at UFC 277 on Saturday in Dallas.
ANALYSIS
It was a struggle at times, but full marks to Abdelwahab for pulling the upset in his UFC debut. Hamdy had just five professional fights under his belt coming into this one and nearly scored an immediate stoppage win of Mayes. Don'Tale somehow survived the early moments and returned the favor on Abdelwahab, nearly closing the showing early in Round 2. With the fight seemingly tied up at a round apiece, Hamdy went to his wrestling and was able to pin an exhausted Mayes to the mat for nearly the entirety of Round 3. It's nearly impossible to see how anyone could have possibly scored the fight for Mayes, but one of the three judges did. Hamdy has some things to work on but, he was impressive and composed in his company debut considering how inexperienced he is.
