Mackenzie Dern

Upset in main event
October 1, 2022
Dern lost to Yan Xiaonan via majority decision (47-48, 47-48, 47-47) at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Las Vegas.
Dern got the benefit of a judges decision in a split decision win over Tecia Torres in her most recent fight this past April, but no help was coming here. As we have seen time and time again, Dern is an excellent mat specialist with otherwise questionable MMA skills. She was outclassed by Yan whenever the two women were standing at distance for an extended period of time. Clearly down 39-37 entering the final round, Mackenzie did all she possibly could to earn a 10-8 from the judges, but only one thought she rounds deserved such a score. It's difficult to say Dern's UFC run has been a disappointment. She's 7-3 in her first 10 fights with the company and has just 15 professional fights under her belt in total. That said, we've seen nothing thus far to suggest Dern is about to go on any sort of prolonged winning streak against quality competition. She simply doesn't possesses the all around offensive arsenal to do so.

Will fight Yan Xiaonan
July 8, 2022
Dern will face Yan Xiaonan in a strawweight match at UFC Fight Night on October 1st.
Dern's next fight is set, and it's a headliner in the early fall. The 29 year-old fighter is coming off a bounce-back win by decision in April against Tecia Torres. Dern and Yan have very similar body types, but Yan is older and is coming off of two straight losses.
Gets benefit of judges decision
April 9, 2022
Dern defeated Tecia Torres via split decision (28-29, 29-28, 29-28) at UFC 273 on Saturday in Jacksonville.
Dern is unquestionably improving each time we see her inside the Octagon. Whether or not that was enough for her to deserve this decision is open to interpretation, but she's clearly getting better. The biggest positive for Dern in this fight is that she nearly submitted Torres on three different occasions in Round 2. The bad news was that she was dominated in the stand-up in Round 3, and seemingly accomplished fairly little in the opening frame, which ended up deciding the fight. Dern remains reckless on the feet, pushing forward when opportunities aren't there. She's better in that area than she was, but she's still not great. What Dern does have going for her -- other than her world-class ground game -- is that fact she's physical and fearless. Enough questions remain surrounding Dern's all-around game that it's a stretch to call her a title contender at this point, but she could get there. Mackenzie has won five of her past six and turned just 29 years of age last month.
Will fight at UFC 273
January 12, 2022
Dern (thumb) will take on Tecia Torres in a strawweight bout at UFC 273 on April 9, Marcel Dorff of MMADNA reports.
Dern will be hoping to bounce back following losing by unanimous decision to Marina Rodriguez at the main event on Oct. 9. That dropped her record with the UFC to 6-2. Dern suffered a thumb injury in the bout, but her medical suspension will be up by the time of this bout.
Picks up medical suspension
October 12, 2021
Dern is facing a six-month medical suspension, reports.
Dern was defeated by Marina Rodriguez by unanimous decision to send Dern's record to 6-2 in the UFC. She will need clearance from a doctor on her right thumb to avoid being suspended for six months.
Drops main event in Vegas
October 9, 2021
Dern lost to Marina Rodriguez via unanimous decision (46-49, 46-49, 46-49) at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Las Vegas.
On the surface, this would appear to be a disappointing loss for Dern in a main event spot in which she entered as a significant (-195) favorite, but this is a woman with barely a dozen professional fights under her belt, and it's not as if she performed poorly here. Dern really only had one good round -- the second -- be she was so dominant in that frame that she deserved an easy 10-8 score. Dern spent nearly the entire frame in a dominating position, scoring 4:21 worth of control time in the five minute round. The vast majority of the rest of the fight -- particularly the final three rounds -- consisted of Rodriguez in control on the feet. Dern's striking has improved, but it will never be on the level of her grappling, and this type of thing is at risk of happening when ever she goes against an opponent who excels in the stand-up. That said, Dern is unquestionably improving, and her ceiling remains among the highest among all female's on the UFC roster. It's not much consolation, but she'll also walk away with a $50,000 bonus after this bout was awarded Fight of the Night honors.
