2025 Fantasy Outlook
Jim Thome isn't a common comp for high-end draft prospects, but that's the type of player scouts envision Kurtz becoming if he reaches his ceiling. The fourth-overall pick in 2024, Kurtz slashed .353/.450/.608 with two home runs and a 16:9 K:BB in 60 plate appearances in the Arizona Fall League after ending the regular season on the injured list at Double-A Midland due to a hamstring strain. Other than a general lack of athleticism and a bad body (listed at 6-foot-5, 240 pounds), Kurtz's only notable flaw is his injury history -- he missed time with random injuries while putting up cartoonish offensive numbers at Wake Forest (career 1.283 OPS, 46 home runs in 110 games his final two seasons). However, after slashing .368/.520/.763 with four homers in 12 games split between Single-A and Double-A before dominating in the AFL, Kurtz's track record of hitting pro pitching is arguably tops in the 2024 draft class. He could reach the majors this summer if he stays healthy and performs as expected. Read Past Outlooks

Smacks homer in win
1BSacramento Athletics
August 15, 2025
Kurtz went 3-for-5 with a three-run home run, a double and three total runs scored in Friday's 10-3 win over the Angels.
Analysis
The long ball was Kurtz's first since his historic four-homer game versus the Astros on July 25. He's been just fine since then, batting .278 with a .724 OPS the 15 games between homers, though he had an 11:20 BB:K in that span as well. The rookie first baseman is up to 24 homers, 65 RBI, 59 runs scored, 21 doubles, two stolen bases and a .305/.384/.631 slash line through 82 contests.

August 4, 2025
Kurtz was named both the American League Player of the Month and Rookie of the Month for July, Jason Foster and Andy Werle of MLB.com report.
Analysis
Kurtz had an incredible last month at the dish, highlighted by his record-breaking performance against the Astros on July 25, when he went 6-for-6 with four home runs and eight RBI. He became the 20th player in MLB history to smack four homers in a game, and his 19 total bases in that contest tied the all-time single-game record set by Shawn Green of the Dodgers on May 23, 2002. Kurtz finished the month of July with a .395/.480/.953 slash line with two steals, 13 doubles, 11 home runs and 27 RBI in 101 plate appearances.
