2019 Fantasy Outlook
Engel more or less lived up to expectations in 2018. He swiped just 16 bags, but in today's low-speed era, that's not nothing, as it tied him for 32nd in the league. He provided very little value elsewhere, hitting just .235/.279/.336 with six homers in 463 plate appearances. Despite his speed, his defense graded out as within a run of average by both UZR and DRS. It's questionable whether he'll have value even in deep leagues moving forward, as he could fall by the wayside as the White Sox start to trend toward competitiveness. A bat as light as Engel's is clearly best suited for a bench role. Read Past Outlooks

Fifth consecutive start
OFChicago White Sox
August 25, 2019
Engel will start in center field and bat eighth Sunday against the Rangers.
ANALYSIS
A uptick in recent matchups versus left-handed pitching coupled with Eloy Jimenez's brief absence due to a hip injury have opened up extra room in the outfield for Engel lately. He'll make a fifth straight start Sunday but should be limited to a short-side platoon role moving forward now that Jimenez is healthy again.

Stat Review
How does Adam Engel compare to other hitters?
This section compares his stats with all batting seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 400 plate appearances)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity and Barrels/PA % are benchmarked against this season's data (min 200 PA) and Hard Hit Rate is benchmarked against last season's data (min 400 PA). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
  • BB/K
    Walk to strikeout ratio
  • BB Rate
The percentage of plate appearances resulting in a walk.
  • K Rate
The percentage of plate appearances resulting in a strikeout.
  • BABIP
Batting average on balls in play. Measures how many of a batter’s balls in play go for hits.
  • ISO
Isolated Power. Slugging percentage minus batting average. A computation used to measure a batter's raw power.
  • AVG

  • OBP
On Base Percentage. A measure of how often a batters reaches base. Roughly equal to number of times on base divided by plate appearances.
  • SLG
Slugging Percentage. A measure of the batting productivity of a hitter. It is calculated as total bases divided by at bats.
  • OPS
On base plus slugging. THe sum of a batter's on-base percentage and slugging percentage.
  • wOBA
Weighted on-base average. Measures a player's overall offensive contributions per plate appearance. wOBA combines all the different aspects of hitting into one metric, weighting each of them in proportion to their actual run value.
  • Exit Velocity
The speed of the baseball as it comes off the bat, immediately after a batter makes contact.
  • Hard Hit Rate
A measure of contact quality from Sports Info Solutions. This stat explains what percentage of batted balls were hit hard vs. medium or soft.
  • Barrels/PA
The percentage of plate appearances where a batter had a batted ball classified as a Barrel. A Barrel is a batted ball with similar exit velocity and launch angle to past ones that led to a minimum .500 batting average and 1.500 slugging percentage.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2018
2016
If you are looking for cheap speed in deep AL-only leagues, Engel is someone you should target. He is an 80-grade speedster that can fly once he is on the bases. The problem with Engel is that he has struggled to reach base since leaving Double-A ball. He has a .306 OBP at Triple-A in just over 350 plate appearances and had an abysmal .235 OBP in nearly the same amount of major-league plate appearances last year. He stole 65 bases in High-A ball in 2015 and was up to 31 in half a season of Double-A ball as recently as 2016. Triple-A and the majors have exposed him to strikeouts at levels typically associated with sluggers rather than his slash-and-dash skills. If he can change his swing to get shorter to the ball and rely upon his speed, there may be something there. As it were, he is a defensive specialist and a pinch runner who could steal 10-15 bases in limited playing time.
Engel spent all of 2015 at High-A Winston-Salem. He developed a keen sense of the strike zone during his time there, and despite striking out 132 times in 608 plate appearances, he posted on-base percentages above .380 in July and August. He kept the momentum going in the Arizona Fall League, where he won the league MVP award and was among the league leaders in batting average and OPS. His speed and athleticism are his key tools, and he could emerge as more than a fourth outfielder type if he continues to get on base at a strong clip. He should spend most, if not all, of 2016 at Double-A.
