2021 Fantasy Outlook
Players arriving from overseas always come with plenty of intrigue, and that was as true as ever for Tsutsugo last offseason. There was added mystery in this case, as it wasn't entirely clear where he fit within the Rays' collection of largely mediocre corner bats, which was as deep as ever. Even after one season in the league, Tsutsugo's value remains somewhat hard to place. He hit just .197 in his MLB debut, but a strong 14.1 BB% and eight homers helped him to a respectable enough 98 wRC+. That mark isn't good enough for a corner player, especially one who played a lot of DH and graded very poorly at third base (though he did at least look good in left field). If that's all Tsutsugo is, expect his role to decrease going forward, but there's perhaps reason to expect at least a bit more, though a good bit of his poor average appears to be on him, as Statcast's .212 xBA still wouldn't be a strong mark. Tsutsugo was acquired by the Dodgers from the Rays on Saturday in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations.
ANALYSIS
The 29-year-old was designated for assignment by the Rays earlier in the week, and he'll end up being traded to the Dodgers rather than exposed to the waiver wire. Tsutsugo joined Tampa Bay on a two-year, $12 million deal prior to the 2020 season and posted a .708 OPS last season, but he has struggled mightily in 2021 with a .167/.244/.218 slash line and 27 strikeouts in 87 plate appearances.

Stat Review
How does Yoshi Tsutsugo compare to other hitters?
This section compares his stats with all batting seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 400 plate appearances)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity and Barrels/PA % are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 400 PA) and Hard Hit Rate is benchmarked against last season's data (min 400 PA). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
  • BB/K
    Walk to strikeout ratio
  • BB Rate
The percentage of plate appearances resulting in a walk.
  • K Rate
The percentage of plate appearances resulting in a strikeout.
  • BABIP
Batting average on balls in play. Measures how many of a batter’s balls in play go for hits.
  • ISO
Isolated Power. Slugging percentage minus batting average. A computation used to measure a batter's raw power.
  • AVG
Batting average. Hits divided by at bats.
  • OBP
On Base Percentage. A measure of how often a batters reaches base. Roughly equal to number of times on base divided by plate appearances.
  • SLG
Slugging Percentage. A measure of the batting productivity of a hitter. It is calculated as total bases divided by at bats.
  • OPS
On base plus slugging. THe sum of a batter's on-base percentage and slugging percentage.
  • wOBA
Weighted on-base average. Measures a player's overall offensive contributions per plate appearance. wOBA combines all the different aspects of hitting into one metric, weighting each of them in proportion to their actual run value.
  • Exit Velocity
The speed of the baseball as it comes off the bat, immediately after a batter makes contact.
  • Hard Hit Rate
A measure of contact quality from Sports Info Solutions. This stat explains what percentage of batted balls were hit hard vs. medium or soft.
  • Barrels/PA
The percentage of plate appearances where a batter had a batted ball classified as a Barrel. A Barrel is a batted ball with similar exit velocity and launch angle to past ones that led to a minimum .500 batting average and 1.500 slugging percentage.

Tsutsugo, who inked a two-year, $12 million deal with the Rays this offseason, has been one of Japan's top power hitters with 29 home runs last season and 38 in 2018. He led Team Japan in the 2017 World Baseball Classic with a 1.113 OPS and has had an OPS of .899 or better while averaging 35 home runs the past four seasons in NPB. He had a 15.7 BB% last season and has a career .382 OBP. His 25.3 K% last season was well up from the 18.4 K% he logged in 2018, which is mildly concerning. Tsutsugo impressed the Rays in a private workout at the Winter Meetings, so they acted fast to acquire his left-handed power bat. Designated hitter, left field and third base are the positions they plan to try him at. Tampa Bay is not in the habit of handing out bad contracts, especially to bat-first players. The playing time should be there, and while he may not hit for a high average, he could be an asset in HR, RBI and OBP.
After spending a couple years on the horizon, Tsutsugoh broke out in 2014 after transitioning to the outfield, and hasn't looked back. He followed up a solid .300/.373/.529 with a better .317/.400/.522 line in 2015, improving his contact skills and his ability to drive the ball. Tsutsugoh has realistic 40 homer upside (in Japan), and has MLB aspirations dating back to his high school days.
