Summoned to big-league club
The Tigers selected Rainey's contract from Triple-A Toledo on Sunday, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports.
Analysis
Rainey began the season with the Pirates, accumulating an ugly 10.57 ERA and 1.70 WHIP over 7.2 innings spanning 11 appearances. He was released in early July and subsequently signed a minor-league deal with Detroit. Since joining the organization, Rainey has been effective with Toledo, posting a 2.52 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 35:14 K:BB across 25 innings. He'll likely fill a low-leverage spot in the Tigers bullpen over the final week of the campaign. Charlie Morton was designated for assignment Sunday to make room for Rainey on the 28-man active roster and 40-man roster.

Rainey nearly missed the entire 2023 campaign after undergoing Tommy John surgery in August 2022. However, the right-hander was able to return to the Nationals bullpen in late-September to make one relief appearance before the season ended. Prior to that outing, Rainey struck out 14 over 13 innings on his minor league rehab assignment. The 31-year-old has yet to pitch more than 48.1 innings in a season, but he did record 12 saves in 2022 and figures to be part of Washington's high-leverage mix in 2024.

Latest Fantasy Rumors

Might get non-tendered
Rainey could be non-tendered by the Nationals, Andrew Golden of The Washington Post reports.
Analysis
Rainey once looked like the Nationals' long-term closer, but he hasn't been the same since coming back from Tommy John surgery, showing diminished velocity while posting a 4.76 ERA and 44:29 K:BB over 51 innings in 2024. The righty did hold a 2.88 ERA in the second half, so perhaps the Nationals will be willing to pay him in his final year of arbitration eligibility in hopes that he bounces back.
