Fletcher was unable to build on his breakthrough 2023 season with the Diamondbacks. The White Sox acquired Fletcher and his 112 wRC+ in 28 games last offseason, ostensibly to play right field. He struggled in spring training and was never able to get on track, posting a low 43 wRC+ in 72 games. His Hard-Hit and average exit velocity both plummeted while he fanned a few ticks more. The White Sox have brought in some journeyman outfielders, so Fletcher must impress during spring training to make the roster, let alone earn significant playing time. Fletcher elected to become a free agent Wednesday, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports.

Analysis
Fletcher had been booted off the White Sox' 40-man roster and has decided to test things out in free agency rather than accepting an outright assignment. The 28-year-old outfielder has slashed only .233/.280/.325 in parts of three big-league seasons and might have to settle for a minor-league contract this winter.

The speed of the baseball as it comes off the bat, immediately after a batter makes contact.
Hard Hit Rate
A measure of contact quality from Sports Info Solutions. This stat explains what percentage of batted balls were hit hard vs. medium or soft.
Barrels/PA
The percentage of plate appearances where a batter had a batted ball classified as a Barrel. A Barrel is a batted ball with similar exit velocity and launch angle to past ones that led to a minimum .500 batting average and 1.500 slugging percentage.

Fletcher had a strong showing in his first taste of the big leagues last season, posting a .301/.350/.441 slash line in 28 games. He also enjoyed a strong campaign at Triple-A Reno, hitting 10 homers with an .899 OPS in 66 contests. Arizona has a glut of outfield talent beyond Fletcher, with Corbin Carroll fresh off a ROTY campaign to go along with Jake McCarthy, Alek Thomas and veteran Lourdes Gurriel, who re-signed in December. Only Carroll and Gurriel are guaranteed playing time, however, with McCarthy and Thomas both finishing with a sub-.700 OPS in 2023. Fletcher may have a hard time picking up starting chances early in 2024, but the possible struggles of McCarthy and/or Thomas could provide a window to establish himself.

Fletcher is a smaller guy like his older brother, the Angels' David Fletcher, but he packs a little more punch at the plate. The Diamondbacks prospect socked 12 home runs between the Double- and Triple-A levels in 2022, collecting nine stolen bases and an .864 OPS along the way. The left-handed hitting Fletcher did struggle versus southpaw hurlers with just a .681 OPS, so he might be more of a platoon bat when he reaches the majors. More likely, he's a fourth outfielder, and even after being added to the 40-man roster he faces an uphill battle for playing time in 2023.
