Picks up win
PSt. Louis Cardinals
May 8, 2023
Cabrera (1-0) allowed a hit and two walks while striking out one in 1.1 innings, earning the win Monday versus the Cubs.
ANALYSIS
Cabrera was the first reliever in after a short outing from Miles Mikolas. Cabrera did his job well, and the Cardinals pulled ahead while he was in the game, giving him his first win of the season. The southpaw has seen mostly low-leverage spots so far, but he's also picked up two holds in his last five outings, which suggests he may be working his way up the leverage ladder. He has a 2.51 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 21:7 K:BB through 14.1 innings this season.

How does Genesis Cabrera compare to other relievers?
This section compares his stats with all relief pitcher seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 30 innings)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity, Barrels/BBE %, Balls Hit 95+ MPH %, and Spin Rate are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 30 IP). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
  • K/BB

Past Fantasy Outlooks

2021
2020
Cabrera used a slight change in pitch mix and a velocity gain to earn the trust of the Cardinals in high-leverage situations in 2021. First, he increased his sinker usage from 5.8 percent in 2020 to 16.2 percent in 2021. The result was a 42% groundball rate, which helped Cabrera limit his HR/9 to 0.4. Combining his ability to keep the ball in the yard and a solid 26% strikeout rate, Cabrera recorded 28 holds. Of his 71 appearances, 32 came in the seventh inning and 44 came when the Cardinals were within two runs of their opponent. However, even as the Cardinals sought to identify a reliable closer for much of the season, Cabrera did not record a save in 2021 due in large part to his continued struggles with control (12.2 BB%). Though that mark will likely have to improve for him to become a full-time closer, he could reasonably enter the season as the Cardinals' second option to pick up saves behind Giovanny Gallegos.
Cabrera came to St. Louis as part of the trade which sent Tommy Pham to Tampa Bay. Cabrera was a starting pitcher throughout his minor-league career, but has worked almost exclusively in relief at the big-league level. Issues that plagued Cabrera in the minors -- namely walks and homers -- have followed him to the major-league level, and the 12.3 K-BB% through his first 42.2 innings in the big leagues lags behind expectations. Despite the flaws, Cabrera struck out one-third of the hitters he faced in 2020 thanks to a lively fastball, a bendy curve and a show-me changeup. Command is the next hurdle for the 24-year-old; he throws hard, but the command and the development of his changeup will determine his future role. To this point, it has mostly been medium- and lower-leverage work, but the potential for more is within his reach.
Cabrera has been a starter throughout most of his minor-league career but pitched primarily out of the bullpen in his rookie season with St. Louis. That was not all by plan; the southpaw received a pair of first-half starts but fared poorly in both. Cabrera may be best suited to a relief role in the long run, anyway, as he possesses a big arm but struggles with his command, posting an 11.1 BB% last season that was in line with his minor-league numbers. He throws a four-seam fastball that clocks in at 96-97 mph and a changeup with which he limited batters to a .243 BAA last season. His third pitch -- a curveball -- was much less effective (.444 BAA) and has graded below average. While Cabrera has yet to translate his ability to throw heat into big strikeout numbers, he's only 23 and is still refining his craft. He's too raw to expect big things from in 2020 but could be a name to watch down the line.
