Nabs first save since 2022
PLos Angeles Angels
April 3, 2024
Garcia earned the save over the Marlins on Tuesday after allowing one run on one hit and a walk in the ninth inning. He struck out a batter as well.
ANALYSIS
Garcia was called upon to protect a 3-0 lead in the ninth with usual closer Carlos Estevez presumably unavailable after pitching each of the last two days. Garcia served up a solo blast to Bryan De La Cruz but was able to close the door without any further harm. Garcia's now given up runs in both appearances though it appears he still has his manager's trust in late-game situations for now.

Stat Review
How does Luis Garcia compare to other relievers?
This section compares his stats with all relief pitcher seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 30 innings)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity, Barrels/BBE %, Balls Hit 95+ MPH %, and Spin Rate are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 30 IP). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
  • K/BB
    Strikeout to walk ratio.
  • K/9
    Average strikeouts per nine innings.
  • BB/9
    Average walks per nine innings.
  • HR/9

  • Fastball
    Average fastball velocity.
  • ERA
Earned run average. The average earned runs allowed per nine innings.
  • WHIP
Walks plus hits per inning pitched.
  • BABIP
Batting average on balls in play. Measures how many balls in play against a pitcher go for hits.
  • GB/FB
Groundball to flyball ratio. The higher the number, the more likely a pitcher is to induce groundballs.
  • Left On Base
The percentage of base runners that a pitcher strands on base over the course of a season.
  • Exit Velocity
The speed of the baseball as it comes off the bat, immediately after a batter makes contact.
  • Barrels/BBE
The percentage of batted ball events resulting in a Barrel. A Barrel is a batted ball with similar exit velocity and launch angle to past ones that led to a minimum .500 batting average and 1.500 slugging percentage.
  • Spin Rate
Spin Rate is the rate of spin on a baseball after it is released. It is measured in revolutions per minute (rpm).
  • Balls Hit 95+ MPH

Headed to San Diego?
PFree Agent
November 30, 2021
Garcia is in "serious talks" with the Padres, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Garcia had a strong season with the Cardinals in 2021, posting a 3.24 ERA with 34 strikeouts as compared to eight walks in 33.1 frames. While he was linked to the Padres on Tuesday, San Diego retained several of its own bullpen arms later that day. As a result, Garcia may have to look for an opportunity with another club, though he is almost certain to land a big-league contract at some point in the offseason.

After playing for four different teams in his previous four seasons, Garcia signed a 2-year deal with San Diego and primarily served in a setup capacity. He was especially valuable in fantasy leagues that count holds, notching 20 (T-6th in the NL) during his age-35 season while also contributing four wins and three saves. The right-hander maintained above-average strikeout and walk rates while inducing plenty of ground balls with his 99 mph sinker. His slider (57% whiff rate) and spitter (40%) were fantastic put-away pitches and he slightly increased his usage of both. Garcia is likely third in San Diego's hierarchy for saves behind Josh Hader and Robert Suarez, but expect plenty of holds again in 2023 with the occasional save chance.
Garcia could be a candidate to factor into the closing picture for the Padres after he submitted a 3.24 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 34:8 K:BB in 33.1 innings for the Cardinals in 2021 before inking a two-year, $7 million deal with San Diego in free agency this winter. He will be opening the year on the injured list with what seems to be an oblique strain, so if any of Dinelson Lamet, Robert Suarez, Emilio Pagan or Pierce Johnson run with the closer's role, Garcia will be stuck pitching in the seventh and eighth innings.
After failing to make the team out of spring training, the 30-year-old Garcia was called up to the Phillies in mid-April and proceeded to have a breakout season, posting a 2.65 ERA in 71.1 innings. That ERA was helped somewhat by a lucky 5.7 percent HR/FB rate, but his strikeout rate (7.6 K/9) and walk rate (3.3 BB/9) were decent enough, while his groundball percentage of 56.3 percent was well above average. However, as a reliever with a short track record of success and limited strikeout ability, he carries risk. There's always the chance that Garcia returns to being his former self -- he put up ugly BB/9 rates of 6.61, 8.31, 5.00, and 4.70 from 2013 to 2016 -- and ends up relegated to a lesser role or out of the league entirely.
Garcia failed to win a bullpen spot last spring after spending the 2015 season as a key member of the Phillies' bullpen. He spent most of last season at Triple-A Lehigh Valley, with occasional trips to the majors when the Phils needed a fresh arm in their bullpen. Garcia has strikeout stuff, but his issue has been, and remains, his inability to command his pitches. His walk rate is much too high for him to be an effective reliever in the majors. Now 30, Garcia is unlikely to suddenly figure out how to lower his walk rate. He will likely get future opportunities thanks to his excellent groundball rate, but he is best used in lower-leverage spots.
Garcia spent his first full season in the majors last year as a 28-year-old. He had been up and down between Triple-A and the majors the past few seasons primarily because of his difficulties commanding his stuff. Walks continued to be an issue for Garcia last season, but he was able to work around them thanks to a solid strikeout rate and an excellent groundball rate. He finished the year working as the primary setup option to closer Ken Giles and will likely open the year back in that role, even with Giles shipped to Houston.
Garcia was outstanding for Triple-A Lehigh Valley last season with a 0.96 ERA and a 52:16 K:BB ratio in 46.2 innings. Unfortunately, his success did not translate to the majors when he was given an opportunity. His command abandoned him and he walked 13 in just 14 innings with the Phillies. He had similar problems when he was given a look in 2013 as well. Garcia's mid-90s fastball makes him intriguing, but until he shows he can command it in the majors he will be seen as nothing more than a Quad-A reliever.
Garcia was a surprise addition to the Phillies' bullpen last season. The 27-year-old righty spent 2012 playing in an independent league and was pitching well as he worked his way up the ladder in the Phillies' minor league system last year when he got the call to the majors in July. Garcia has a mid-90s fastball that he complements with a slider and cutter. His 3.73 ERA with the Phillies looks good, but his 23:23 K:BB ratio in 31.1 innings is a major red flag. If Garcia wants to have any chance of sticking in the majors, the walk rate will have to come down significantly. He'll get an opportunity to compete for a middle relief job this spring.
