Tristan Beck

29-Year-Old PitcherRP
San Francisco Giants
2025 Fantasy Outlook
Beck's efforts were severely limited in 2024 by a shoulder aneurysm that occurred in spring training and caused him to miss most of the season. He worked just under 30 innings when things were all said and done, but he was effective in his September work for the Giants. Beck has been a full-time starter throughout his entire professional career, but the time missed in 2024 may lead the Giants to use Beck in a swing role out of the bullpen in 2025 so as not to overwork him. His fastball has been particularly tough on batters because of his extension and the ride he gets on the pitch more so than its velocity. However, his non-fastballs have not delivered the same types of outcomes, despite his slider being graded out as his best pitch by Stuff+. Relief may be the best home for Beck long term, and it would not surprise us to see his stuff play up in shorter stints in 2025 with the Giants should they decide to carefully manage his workload after the lost time last season. Analysis
Since being sent down to Triple-A on June 18, Beck has given up two unearned runs over 6.1 innings while striking out nine batters. He'll rejoin the big club Saturday to provide San Francisco with a fresh bullpen arm, replacing Mason Black.

Stat Review
How does Tristan Beck compare to other relievers?
This section compares his stats with all relief pitcher seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 30 innings)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity, Barrels/BBE %, Balls Hit 95+ MPH %, and Spin Rate are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 30 IP). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
  • K/BB
    Strikeout to walk ratio.
  • K/9
    Average strikeouts per nine innings.
  • BB/9

The percentage of base runners that a pitcher strands on base over the course of a season.
  • Exit Velocity
The speed of the baseball as it comes off the bat, immediately after a batter makes contact.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2024
2023
He struggled in a late-season look as a starter (7.50 ERA), but Beck was effective when used in relief by the Giants, collecting a 3.33 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 60:19 K:BB over 73 innings. A .613 OPS against right-handed batters and .820 OPS versus left-handed hitters would also seem to point to his future being in the bullpen. While Beck has missed bats at a solid 24.5 percent rate in the minors, that number dropped as he moved up levels and his 19.2 percent mark with the Giants suggests he might not produce much swing-and-miss in the big leagues. Beck also no longer looks like he'll be much of a groundball guy, holding a 35.2 percent rate at Triple-A Sacramento and a 40.8 percent rate with the Giants in 2023. It seems unlikely that the 27-year-old will be entrusted with a starting role or high-leverage relief role.
Beck was the headliner of the July 2019 trade which sent Mark Melancon to the Braves. He finished that year out strongly but has failed to distinguish himself since then, most recently posting a 5.25 ERA and 116:36 K:BB across 111.1 frames between Double- and Triple-A in 2022. Despite the mediocre year and Beck slated to turn 27 in June, the Giants chose to add him to their 40-man roster this offseason to keep him away from the Rule 5 Draft. Beck typically induces ground balls at a high rate and has struck out over a batter per innings during his time in the minors, but he still doesn't look like more than a swingman type at this point.

Beck, who made his first Cactus League start Wednesday against the Guardians, is still likely to begin the 2025 campaign as a long reliever, Jack Magruder of MLB.com reports. "We have a lot of really good arms. He's one of them," manager Bob Melvin said. "Maybe more long relief than starting right now with the guys we have a little bit ahead of him."

Scouted by Blue Jays
PAtlanta Braves
July 27, 2019
The Blue Jays have been scouting Beck, who could be a returning piece if they trade pitching to the Braves, Jon Morosi of MLB Network reports.
Analysis
Beck is not a good enough prospect to land Marcus Stroman and maybe not even Ken Giles, but the Braves are also potentially interested in Daniel Hudson and/or Eric Sogard. Beck has a 3.07 FIP (5.65 ERA) and 1.61 WHIP in 36.2 innings at High-A Florida.
