Van Rooyen earned a spot in this years U.S. Open after going 13-under par Monday in the U.S Open Final Qualifying event in Columbus.
ANALYSISThe Columbus final qualifying site hosted a number of top PGA Tour stars, with names like
Max Homa,
Rickie Fowler and
Cameron Young all attempting to qualify for this years U.S. Open. However, it was Van Rooyen whose name came out on top when the final putt was made Monday evening. In this two qualifying rounds, Van Rooyen made a total of 14 birdies, including four straight birdies in his last five holes to close out his final round. In fact Van Rooyen only dropped shots on three of his 36 holes. This resulted not only in Van Rooyen qualifying for the U.S. Open, but he earned medalist honors as he finish a top the leaderboard of this star studded field. The result comes as a little bit of a surprise as Van Rooyen has been hot and cold with his play this season. Coming into this qualifier, Van Rooyen had competed in 15 PGA Tour events, making the cut in only eight of those events, but collecting two top-10s in his other seven events. He will now try to replicate his play at Oakmont next week.
