Stephen Strasburg's Evolution

Yahoo! Sports Steve Henson profiles Strasburg from his days as an overweight college freshman.

Strasburg must have been out of shape if Tony Gwynn of all people "shook his head" at Strasburg's sorry conditioning.

There is also speculation by ESPN's Peter Gammons that Strasburg's agent Scott Boras might try to ask for $50 million or have him play in Japan for a year.

While Boras did something similar with both J.D. Drew and Luke Hochevar, the difference here is that it wouldn't just be the Nationals (who own the No. 1 pick) and their fans who want to string Boras up if that happens, but every baseball fan. If he deprives baseball of one of the most exciting talents in the last generation because he won't merely accept $15 million or so - which would be record-breaking by a wide margin for a top draft pick in a down economy - I think the backlash might be enormous.

It's just speculation anyway, but I don't think even Boras would have the sack to risk getting called on |STAR|that|STAR| bluff.

One other question worth pondering. Say you're in the inaugural year of a 12-team mixed keeper league. Where do you draft Strasburg - ahead of David Price? Ahead of established young pitchers like Scott Kazmir or Justin Verlander?
