Training Camp Notes

It's only been a few days, but there are a few major developments early on that deserve some mention. Here are the key ones:

Brett Favre - considering retirement: There are plenty of skeptics, but don't count me among them. Favre is nearly 41, coming of ankle surgery and proved just about all he could last year including a sweep of the playoff-bound Packers. I think he's done.

Sidney Rice (hip) would be the most affected as he emerged as a legit No. 1 NFL receiver under Favre, and it's doubtful Tarvaris Jackson would be able to exploit his talents to that extent. Visanthe Shiancoe could also be hurt as Favre loved to look for him in the red-zone. Percy Harvin is likely to be less affected as he can "create his own shot" so to speak and doesn't need an elite floor general to get him the ball. Adrian Peterson might even benefit, though less red-zone trips could cost him some scores potentially.

Dez Bryant - out 4-6 weeks with a high ankle sprain: This could derail his season as training camp is crucial for rookie receivers. While he might be back for Week 1, it's almost inconceivable that he'd have a major role out of the gate. It also buys Roy Williams - who's looked sharp early on - another chance to be a factor in Dallas.

Terrell Owens - signs with the Bengals: There are rumors that Antonio Bryant's knee injury drove this signing, in which case Owens could have value as the team's primary red-zone target. If Bryant's knee turns out to be okay (and he seems to think it will for what that's worth), then there aren't really enough targets to go around between Bryant, Owens and Ochocinco in a run-first offense. (Ochocinco specifically told us (scroll down) the offense would be run heavy again this year).

Montario Hardesty - out at least two weeks with a twisted knee: - I mention this and not the Knowshon Moreno hamstring (three weeks) injury because Hardesty is a rookie, and training camp is therefore much more important for him. Jerome Harrison should have the edge for the feature back role early on, though unlike Dez Bryant, Hardesty should have an easier time catching up as running back is an easier position to learn than wide receiver.
