Feeling healthy again
April 8, 2020
Penix (shoulder) has been throwing and taking part in other position drills at The Stable QB Academy in his hometown of Tampa since Indiana cancelled its spring sports and activities in mid-March, Stefan Krajisnik of The Indianapolis Star reports.
ANALYSIS
Penix saw what was shaping up to be an impressive redshirt freshman season in 2019 come to an end in early November, when he required surgery after sustaining a sternoclavicular joint injury to his right shoulder in a Week 10 win over Northwestern. With his top threat for the starting job, Peyton Ramsey, moving on to Northwestern as a graduate transfer, Penix is slated to open the upcoming season as Indiana's unquestioned No. 1 signal-caller. Penix's ability to take part in throwing drills suggests his shoulder won't be a concern by the time Indiana resumes practicing, and the signal-caller could have some breakout potential in an Indiana offense that returns two of its top three pass catchers (Whop Philyor and Ty Fryfogle) in 2020. Prior to getting hurt last season, Penix completed 68.8 percent of his passes for 8.7 yards per attempt and a 10:4 TD:INT while adding 119 rushing yards and two scores on the ground in six games.
