Coming off the best season of his career, Williams may have anticipated more interest from around the league in free agency. Instead he went unsigned until late May, eventually inking a deal with the Cardinals. There are worse landing spots, especially after former Cardinals back Chase Edmonds signed with the Dolphins in March. Williams hasn't missed a game in two seasons, and his durability combined with impressive work as a pass catcher allowed him to reach 1,010 total yards and eight total touchdowns for the Chiefs last year despite starting only seven games and averaging 3.9 YPC. The 27-year-old now finds himself working behind James Conner, who has missed multiple games in each of his five NFL seasons but nonetheless scored 18 touchdowns last year (in 15 appearances). The competition for backup roles behind Conner appears less than fierce, with Williams joined by rookie sixth-round pick Keaontay Ingram, 2020 seventh-rounder Eno Benjamin and a few undrafted backs.
For the first time in his three years in the NFL, Williams played in all 16 games for Kansas City, but his production was effectively the same as the season before as he remained buried on the depth chart behind rookie Clyde Edwards-Helaire and others. Williams did get his chance to prove himself in the postseason, rushing for 130 yards and 5.0 yards per carry in the team's first two playoff games. An undrafted rookie who previously shared a backfield with Edwards-Helaire at LSU in 2017,
Williams has a sturdy frame, decent hands and the toughness to handle short-yardage work, but his lack of speed and burst limits the upside if he's ever forced into a lead role. With only the oft-injured Jerick McKinnon competing for backup touches behind Edwards-Helaire though, Williams could handle the largest workload of his career in 2021, potentially including third-downs snaps. His volume, at least to some extent, will depend on whether Edwards-Helaire enjoys the breakout season many are predicting.
Williams saw a significant uptick in his playing time during his second professional campaign, logging 216 snaps over 12 games prior to his season ending prematurely due to a hip injury. He didn't improve his efficiency as a runner (3.4 YPC) in 2019, but Williams did increase his involvement as a pass catcher, hauling in 15 passes for 167 yards and a score. With Clyde Edwards-Helaire the only safe bet for a key role, Williams and Darwin Thompson are set to serve behind the rookie.
Williams went undrafted in 2018, but managed to claim a roster spot out of training camp. The rookie tailback rushed just 13 times for 44 yards all season and saw only 62 snaps on special teams. While Kareem Hunt has since departed due to off-the-field issues, Damien Williams tops the depth chart and offseason acquisitions of Carlos Hyde (free agency), Darwin Thompson (sixth-round draft pick) and James Williams (UDFA) could force Williams to earn his spot again in 2019.
