Garrett Gilbert
Garrett Gilbert
30-Year-Old QuarterbackQB
Dallas Cowboys
2021 Fantasy Outlook
Drafted in the sixth round back in 2014, Gilbert came into the season with only six pass attempts on his NFL resume, but injury issues at quarterback for the Cowboys forced him into his first career start Week 9, and he held his own. The team is in the market for an affordable veteran backup to Dak Prescott, but if it can't find one, Gilbert will compete with Ben DiNucci and Cooper Rush for the No. 2 spot on the depth chart. Any snaps under center in the Dallas offense could be productive ones with Amari Cooper, CeeDee Lamb and Michael Gallup on the other end of passes, but it would take another injury to Prescott to make Gilbert a viable fantasy option. Set for first-team reps
QBDallas Cowboys
July 29, 2021
Gilbert is expected to get most of the first-team reps in training camp while Dak Prescott (shoulder) is sidelined, Jon Machota of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Ben DiNucci and Cooper Rush will also spot in, but Gilbert is the favorite to win the No. 2 job and will get a long look from the coaching staff as a result. There's no timetable yet for when Prescott might get back into action, but the Cowboys don't seem worried about his Week 1 availability. If that changes, the front office might also change its mind on whether Gilbert -- who has only one career NFL start under his belt -- is enough of an insurance policy and bring in veteran competition for QB reps.

Gilbert beat out Drew Stanton to become the No. 2 behind quarterback Baker Mayfield in 2019. Mayfield regressed in his second NFL season but not to the point of being replaced and remained healthy all season. As such, Gilbert played just eight snaps. With the Browns adding Case Keenum in the offseason to back up Mayfield, Gilbert enters training camp competing for the No. 3 job with undrafted free agent Kevin Davidson.
Gilbert made his NFL debut with the Panthers in 2018, then tore up the AAF with a league-leading 2,152 passing yards, 13 touchdowns and three interceptions. The former 2014 sixth-round pick competed for the Browns' backup quarterback job against Drew Stanton and David Blough. He eventually earned a spot as the No. 3 QB after the team traded Blough to the Lions.
Gilbert has yet to play in a regular season game since being drafted in the sixth round in 2014, but finds himself battling for the Panthers' backup quarterback job with Taylor Heinicke.
The 26-year-old Gilbert is yet to play in an NFL game, and with Cam Newton, Derek Anderson and Joe Webb already on the Panthers' roster, his involvement with the team will probably be limited to being just another training camp arm.
