Cousins had some bright spots last season -- he twice threw four TD passes in a game, once topping 500 yards -- but with eighth overall pick Michael Penix lurking, it was only a matter of time before Cousins was pushed aside. He’s fortunate he lasted as long as he did. In his last five games, Cousins threw one TD pass to nine interceptions before he was finally benched Weeks 16-18. Trading Cousins is easier said than done, because he has a no-trade clause and wants to start. The Falcons will need to eat a lot of his salary to get a deal done, but it's unclear how much they're willing to keep. The only way he’ll regain the starting job in Atlanta is if Penix is injured or struggles horribly this season. In that case, Cousins would only have value in two-QB leagues at most. He looked washed up down the stretch last year, ranking 30th among 35 QBs in on-target percentage Weeks 10-15. He hasn't run for a touchdown since 2022, and his mediocre arm isn’t getting any stronger (he threw only 7.3 percent of his attempts beyond 20 yards last year, ranking 32nd). Cousins completed 21 of 31 passes for 173 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions while rushing twice for two yards in the Falcons' 34-10 loss to the Dolphins on Sunday.
				ANALYSIS
Making his first start since Week 15 of last season, Cousins understandably had some rust to work through, and he also had the disadvantage of having to operate without No. 1 receiver Drake London (hip). Cousins eventually developed a bit of rhythm as the game went on, but he averaged just 5.6 yards per attempt and focused the overwhelming majority of his attention on Kyle Pitts. Cousins could certainly be better now that he has a game under his belt and with another week of practice -- not to mention with London at his disposal -- but it remains to be seen if he'll have that opportunity in a Week 9 road matchup against the Patriots or whether Penix will be healthy enough to start that game.

Cousins was on pace for close to 5,000 yards and 40 TDs last year when he snapped his Achilles tendon in October. As it was, he finished QB24 in fantasy, despite playing only eight games. That’s what hefty volume will do for you -- when he went down in Week 8, he was the league leader in attempts (311). For the second year in a row, his average target depth dropped -- to 7.3, 24th in the league -- which boosted his on-target rate to a career-high 80.4 percent (2nd) and his completion rate to 69.5 percent (3rd). Cousins eschewed the deep ball (6.4 percent of attempts, 31st) for intermediate targets (26.0 percent, 3rd). That’ll probably be the formula again this season for the 36-year-old, especially because he never had elite arm strength in the first place. Whether he gets 600 attempts is the question after he signed with Atlanta in March for $100 million guaranteed. First, he’s still working back from the injury; second, new offensive coordinator Zac Robinson, after five years as a Rams assistant, is somewhat of an unknown; and third, the Falcons surprisingly drafted QB Michael Penix eighth overall in April. A lot can go sideways, including risk of eventually being usurped by Penix and his cannon arm. Cousins will need elite volume to have value in single-QB leagues, as he doesn't provide any rushing stats and isn't quite a top passer.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
    Could draw Week 8 start
Cousins could be trending toward starting Sunday's Week 8 matchup against the Dolphins due to Michael Penix's knee bruise, Marc Raimondi of ESPN.com reports.
				ANALYSIS
Penix suffered a bone bruise late in Sunday's Week 7 matchup against the 49ers, but he never exited the game. Head coach Raheem Morris has maintained he feels good about Penix's chances of playing Sunday, but he also afforded Cousins an increasing number of practice reps as the week went on. Cousins last started in Week 15 of last season, and he was subsequently benched for Penix for the final three games of the Falcons' non-playoff season.
