Allen announced his retirement from pro football Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Even though he just turned 29 back in October, Allen has decided to hang up his cleats. His five-year career was complicated by serious injuries, including a knee issue that kept him out for the entire 2020 season. However, he came back for the 2021 season and started in 16 games, including the Rams' victory against the Bengals in Super Bowl LVI.

The first year of the veteran's three-year deal with the Rams was marred by multiple injuries that forced the starting center out of a total of ten games. Allen will compete with his replacement, Coleman Shelton, for the center role, with the loser of the battle likely filling in as the right guard.
Allen's value to the Rams was set in March, as he signed a three-year, $24 million deal to remain as the Rams' starting center after being named as an alternate to the Pro Bowl in 2021. Entering his fourth year in the league, Allen will be a stalwart at the position with Coleman Shelton operating as the backup.
Former starting center Austin Blythe signed with the Chiefs during the offseason, so Allen projects to compete for the starting role during training camp. Allen sustained a significant MCL injury in November of 2019, and he hasn't seen the field since. He was healthy to start 2020, but was buried on the depth chart and then sustained another knee injury. Former starting right guard Austin Corbett took starting center reps during spring minicamps, and Allen ran with the second offense while also playing some right guard. Corbett appears to be the better fit for the schematic change the Rams are looking to deploy with their offensive line. However, the organization invested a fourth round pick in Allen in the 2018 NFL Draft, so he'll probably crack the 53-man roster. He has nine career starts, after all.
