The 49ers release Joseph on Monday, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The team signed Joseph in May to compete with incumbent Jake Moody for the placekicking job. After two weeks of training camp, the 49ers apparently have seen enough to know that Joseph isn't their guy, leaving Moody as the probable Week 1 starter.

Looking to add competition for second-year kicker Anders Carlson, Green Bay scooped up Joseph in the offseason. Carlson had a shaky rookie season, but Joseph was not particularly accurate the last two years himself. The Packers ended up cutting both players and signing rookie Brayden Narveson instead.
Joseph displayed his leg strength with a 61-yard field goal last season, but his second year in Minnesota otherwise was far less effective than his first. His FG rate dropped from 86.8 percent to 78.8, and he missed six PATs after whiffing on four the year before. Joseph is on the low end of fantasy options, benefiting from an above-average Minnesota offense as well as playing his home games indoors.
After stints with the Browns and Titans his first two years in the league, Joseph finally found a home in Minnesota, where he converted 87 percent of his field-goal attempts last season, including seven of nine from 50-plus yards. That type of efficiency might not continue given Joseph’s middling career averages, but kicking indoors while situated in a consistently productive offense should outweigh any sort of regression.
Joseph kicked for Cleveland in 2018 and Tennessee in 2019, before spending most of 2020 on Tampa Bay's practice squad. The Vikings signed him in February, a month before they released Dan Bailey. The team also has undrafted rookie Riley Patterson and could add a veteran to the mix for training camp. Minnesota finished fourth in yards and 11th in points last year, so there is some upside for whoever gets the job.
Joseph was decent for the Browns in 2018 but then lost his job to 2019 draft pick Austin Seibert. Unable to find a Week 1 gig, Joseph spent time on Carolina's practice squad before signing with Tennessee in December. He made it through five games, including playoffs, without any misses, but somehow attempted just one FG in that stretch. The Titans likely will bring in competition for this season's job.
After being a serviceable fill-in for the final 14 weeks of the 2018 season, Joseph returned to the Browns' 2019 preseason roster as the incumbent kicker. He and Austin Seifert, a fifth-round draft pick in 2019, battled for the job, which eventually went to Seifert.

Ahead in GB's kicker competition
KGreen Bay Packers
August 4, 2024
Joseph has pulled ahead of Anders Carlson in Green Bay's kicking competition, according to Matt Schneidman of The Athletic.
ANALYSIS
Joseph made all seven of his field-goal attempts in Thursday's practice and has missed only twice on 31 attempts in portions of training camp open to reporters, while Carlson has six misses on the same number of attempts. Carlson appears to be plagued by the same accuracy issues that persisted throughout his rookie season, when Carlson missed six field-goal attempts and five PATs in the regular season, plus a field goal and a PAT in the playoffs. Joseph has made 100 of 121 career regular-season field-goal attempts and would be poised for a busy season behind an up-and-coming Packers offense if he beats out Carlson for the kicking job in Green Bay.
