RORY'S U.S. OPEN DOMINANCE
Rory McIlroy's arithmetic statistics in his commanding U. S. Open Championship performance have been printed and spoken far and wide. But there are other unwritten and unspoken characteristics that carry the same importance as printed and spoken numbers.
Late in the day after McIlroy's implosion at the Masters, the 21-year old said he was going to use the experience to broaden his attitude and resolve to learn from what was a publicly witnessed embarrassment of the first order.
Last weekend he showed controlled aggressiveness on the course mixed with self control –- he said he would become more "brash" when competing. One example: there was a slight sign of self satisfaction when saving par with an 18-foot putt –- but no histrionics. Despite repeated mention of the Masters debacle again and again, he calmly handled the irritants with a smile and a response that he had learned from his mistake.
McIlroy has absorbed a self assurance from his very significant win. The inner confidence of knowing he can prevail against a U.S. Open field on a difficult U.S. Open venue will carry forward in performance well above his driving distance, greens hit and putts used. His good attitude and strong self-confidence will carry him far.
He'll be a stalwart performer for the fantasy player inasmuch now being 22, he'll be in the significant events for a long time carrying a level of confidence needed for a winner.
THE TRAVELERS
The Travelers Championship usually is a birdie-fest where bombers and non-bombers can be successful. Last year, one of the three first-place finishers ranked first in driving distance while another was ranked 77th.
Strong putting will carry the shorter hitter while driving distance will set up wedge approaches to the slow greens, about 10.5 on the stimp meter.
Bubba Watson, who has two 2011 victories, earned his first PGA Tour win here last year, and the two others who tied for first in regulation last year at the Travelers, Scott Verplank and Corey Pavin, are in the field this week. Their stats from 2010 show how they did it.
