U.S. OPEN

2008: Torrey Pines-South course, 7,643 yards, Par 71.
2009: Bethpage Black course, 7,426 yards, par 70.
2010: Pebble Beach, 7,040 yards, par 71.

This year the venue is Congressional Country Club, Blue course, in suburban Washington, D.C., which will play at 7,574 yards with a par 71. Only the 2008 Torrey Pines South course exceeds this year's length.

Fairway width will range from 18 to 35 yards with an average of 25 yards in landing zones. On either side of fairways, a six-foot swath of intermediate rough will run the length of each hole at 0.875 inches. Then a 6-t0-8-foot band of first cut of primary rough will range from 2.75 inches to 3.25 inches. A second cut of primary rough at four inches extends to and beyond the ropes.

Greens will run at 14 to 14.5 on the stimp meter.

Driving distance will be helpful, but driving accuracy will be demanded. The rough will be punitive as per the usual USGA practice. Getting to the green after wayward shots will be very difficult. The usual slick greens, again a USGA hallmark, call for patience.

U. S. Open experience is a plus. Good driving accuracy is a big attribute as is GIR.
Good numbers in proximity to the hole and bogey avoidance plus a strong strokes gained -- putting should help you form your roster for the Open.

QUICK LOOK:

Torrey Pines

- Three players had more birdies than bogeys.
- Two players had the same number of birdies and bogeys.

- 10 players had the same number of birdies and bogeys.

- Two players had the same number of birdies and bogeys.

(NOTE: Birdie/bogey stats include only the 60 golfers and ties who made the cut.)
