The Reshuffle List: Fallout From the First Reshuffle

The first reshuffle of the 2015-16 PGA Tour season took place shortly after the fall portion of the schedule wrapped up. Here's a look at who's in good shape heading into the next segment of the PGA Tour season, beginning -- for these golfers -- with the Sony Open in Hawaii in January:

Tyrone Van Aswegen, +28 spots - Van Aswegen's climb to No. 1 in the Reshuffle List standings came mainly from his T3 at the Frys.com Open -- he finished one shot out of the Emiliano Grillo-Kevin Na playoff to start the 2015-16 season. Just as important, however, is that he made the cut -- and got FedEx Cup points - in every start he made in the rest of fall, which was four additional events. That will help you keep your card in a hurry. On the negative side, none of those finishes were better than T46, and that shows in his statistics, where he ranked 94th in greens in regulation, 100th in strokes gained-tee to green and 64th in strokes gained-total. He'll need greater consistency to contend on a frequent basis in 2016.

Harold Varner III, +23 spots -
Varner's rise came virtue of a T5 in Mayakoba along with three other finishes in the money. The finish at Mayakoba included a Friday 62. Varner, one of the most talked about rookies on the PGA Tour this year because of his outgoing and engaging personality, has the game to back it up, too. At that OHL Classic he ranked third in driving distance and T8 in driving accuracy, a nice combination. For the season he ranks 32nd in ball striking. That work has led to more guaranteed starts in the beginning of next season. He also just lost in a playoff at the Australian PGA -- more added experience to go on next year.

Mark Hubbard, +23 spots -
Hubbard also jumped 23 spots, from 31st to eighth, on the backs of several mid-pack finishes and a T18 at the 2015-ending RSM Classic. While that was his best finish of fall, the 136 FedEx Cup points earned will give him a nice head start toward keeping his card AND a nice head start toward getting starts in spring. Because remember, that's what Reshuffle List positioning is all about: gaining starts for the next period, in this case, beginning with the Sony Open in January.

Derek Fathauer, +21 spots -
Fathauer is continuing proof for all Reshuffle List players that even if you get off to a bad start, it only takes one strong finish to completely change your plight. Fathauer started with two missed cuts in his first two starts of the season, the Frys.com Open and the Shriners. But sandwiched around a T50 at the Sanderson Farms Championship and a T70 at the RSM Classic was fourth place at the OHL Classic at Mayakoba. That launched him from 25th at the start of the reshuffle period to fourth entering 2016. What made the difference in Mexico? His irons and putter. Ranked 161st in greens in regulation and 126th in strokes gained-putting for the season, he was T5 in greens hit and 13th in putts per GIR (there was no ShotLink in Mexico). Play like that in 2016 and Fathauer could finally get his first PGA Tour victory.

Tim Wilkinson, +18 spots -
Wilkinson rose from 35th to 17th via three mid-pack but consistent finishes: a T33 at the Sanderson Farms Championship, a T34 in Mayakoba and a T44 at the RSM Classic. That'll get you 78 FedEx Cup points, however, and he now ranks 96th in FedEx Cup points. The key for Wilkinson will be to continue this consistency whenever he plays in the spring. He ranked 42nd in strokes gained-tee to green but 94th in strokes gained-putting. He'll need to improve with the flatstick in 2016 to ensure he has a card for 2016-2017.

TOP FALLERS

Martin Piller, -36 spots - Piller fell from second to 38th, a precipitous drop caused by two missed cuts -- at the Sanderson Farms Championship and the OHL Classic at Mayakoba -- two MDFs (the Saturday cut to get the field to a manageable size for Sunday) at the Frys.com Open and the RSM Classic, and finally a T62 in Las Vegas. All that adds up a total of nine points earned for the fall portion of the 2015-16 season. Now with his starts limited in the first part of next year and a game that saw him ranked 202nd (out of 216) in strokes gained-tee to green, 115th in strokes gained-putting and 186th in strokes gained-total, Piller needs to improve on much in his game this offseason. And fast.

Dicky Pride, -28 spots -
Pride, one of the best stories of last year's Web.com Tour season, is off to a slow start, falling all the way to 42nd on the Reshuffle List and becoming one of the early Nothing Men of the 2015-16 PGA Tour season, having earned no FedEx Cup points or money thus far. He played every North American event and never shot better than 69, with only one round in the 60s. What was the problem? He's a stunning 263rd in greens in regulation (62 percent), 203rd in strokes gained-tee to green and 125th in strokes gained-putting. All told he's losing nearly two shots per round to the field. On the PGA Tour, you can't afford that. Now with limited starts coming in the new year, Pride will need to play his best in the few starts he gets, or else he'll soon find himself back on the Web.com Tour.

Rhein Gibson, -22 spots -
Gibson is an interesting case because of how different hemispheres could help one's game. Gibson didn't have a very good fall 2015 PGA Tour campaign, missing four straight cuts before finishing T58 at The RSM Classic. He ranked no better than 70th in any key statistical category (driving distance), and was 100-plus in all the others. But he's Australian, and his trip down under this November and December has been productive, finishing T8 at the Emirates Australian Open and 44th at the Australian PGA in tough conditions. With the Sony Open little more than a month away, maybe Gibson can ride that momentum. He'll need to, at 37th in the Reshuffle List standings he needs all the help he can get.

Henrik Norlander, -19 spots -
Norlander has seen indifferent play to begin his 2015-16 season, making three cuts but finishing no better than T39 and missing two. That has him 130th in FedEx Cup points and 22nd on the Reshuffle List, which means he'll get a fair number of starts in spring (Sony, CareerBuilder, Pebble at minimum) and a chance to improve his standings and get more opportunities into the southern swing. The biggest need for improvement this offseason is ... well ... everything, as he's 128th in driving accuracy, 126th in greens in regulation, 136th in strokes gained-putting and 137th in scoring average.

Kelly Kraft, -18 spots -
Kraft fell 18 spots to 34th, a major trouble area on the Reshuffle List in terms of getting starts in the next period of events. He missed his first two cuts before going T33-T68 at Sanderson Farms and Mayakoba before missing the cut in Sea Island to end 2015. The culprit is poor tee-to-green play - he's 31st in strokes gained - putting - that has him ranked 222nd in driving accuracy, 128th in greens in regulation and 163rd in strokes gained-tee to green. He has a couple weeks to fix that before some of the most crucial weeks of his PGA Tour season begin.

The Nothing Men Update

The following players have not made any cuts in 2015, thus earning no FedEx Cup points: Pride, Ancer, Pampling and Landry.
