There’s no question that Jacob Markstrom is the starter in New Jersey, but Allen is capable of being a good alternative. He had a 13-16-1 record, 2.66 GAA and .906 save percentage across 31 regular-season appearances with the Devils in 2024-25, which was a nice rebound from 2021-22 through 2023-24 when he posted a 3.44 GAA and an .897 save percentage in 111 outings with 98 of those games coming from his tenure with the then-rebuilding Canadiens. Allen has had an up-and-down career, but at the age of 35, his No. 2 role with a competitive Devils squad is something that suits him well. Look for him to appear in about 30 games in 2025-26 and put up adequate numbers in the same vein as what he did last season. Poor showing in San Jose
Allen stopped 23 of 28 shots in Thursday's 5-2 loss to the Sharks.
				  ANALYSIS
The Sharks jumped out to a 3-0 lead before the Devils got on the board. Allen had won his first five decisions this season, but this was a much poorer showing, and it comes just after Jacob Markstrom's disastrous return from a lower-body injury in Colorado. Allen is at a 5-1-0 record with a 2.39 GAA and a .906 save percentage through seven outings. The next few games could be pivotal for determining the workload split in the Devils' crease. They visit the Kings on Saturday and the Ducks on Sunday, so expect both Allen and Markstrom to each draw a start to close out this road trip.

Allen will be 34 heading into this season and itching to return to the postseason for the first time since 2019-20. He already has a cup with St. Louis, and his winning resume will be a perfect fit with the young, high-tempo Devils. Allen didn't exactly excel when he arrived in Jersey after the deadline in 2023-24, but he brought stability to a team that had none in net. This season, Allen will back up Jacob Markstrom, who's coming off the NHL's third-best GSAx (28.93; goals saved above expectation). Allen doesn't have to carry his team anymore, and that means his ratios will bounce up, perhaps even close to his numbers in St. Louis. He'll be a solid option as an above-average play in daily formats, and he and Markstrom will verge on a top-10 duo in formats where team goaltending counts.
