2025 Fantasy Outlook
Tavares put together a strong contract year with 38 goals and 74 points in 75 regular-season contests. He added seven points in 13 playoff games. Tavares could have commanded serious money with high-end offense even as he enters his age-35 season, but he instead took a steep hometown discount to stay with the Maple Leafs for four more years. While Toronto's core is poised to change, Tavares will still be the second-line center for at least another year or two. Familiarity can be a good thing, as he won't have to adjust to new linemates and should still be part of a strong power-play unit. However, fantasy managers should be wary of the age -- while Tavares is talented, those skills have appeared to decline recently, and his 2024-25 campaign was propped up by a 19.0 shooting percentage. He shouldn't be the first center on your roster in most cases. Read Past Outlooks
Keeps climbing record books
Tavares scored the game winner in a 4-3 overtime victory over the Sabres on Saturday. He also added an assist.
ANALYSIS
The points extended his streak to four games and seven points (four goals, three assists). Tavares took a stretch pass from Matthew Knies, broke in on net and fired a shot over Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen's blocker from the slot. It was Tavares' 499th career goal and his 19th overtime tally, which ties him with Leon Draisaitl and Jaromir Jagr for fourth in NHL history. Only Alex Ovechkin (27), Sidney Crosby (24) and Brad Marchand (21) have more extra-session tallies. Tavares needs one point to move into sole possession of 63rd on the all-time list. He's currently tied with Joe Nieuwendyk and Mike Bossy (1,126 points).

When the Maple Leafs signed Tavares to a seven-year, $77 million contract in the summer of 2018, the belief was he left a bit of money on the table to join Toronto. However, age has been catching up to him a bit quicker than hoped and his $11 million cap hit is now projected to be meaningfully more than he'll be worth in 2024-25 for his age-34 campaign. Still, the Canadian center had 29 goals and 65 points in 80 appearances last season, so while he might not provide the Leafs with great value relative to his salary, there's still plenty to like from a fantasy perspective. Even assuming he continues to decline, Tavares still figures to supply around 25 goals and 55-60 points this year. His value also ticks up in leagues that factor in faceoffs -- he won 802 draws last year, accounting for 59.3 percent of his total opportunities. Unlike his offensive production, his success on the faceoff should remain steady this year.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Working toward extension
Tavares and the Maple Leafs continue to discuss the terms of a contract extension, Pierre LeBrun of TSN reports Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Tavares and the Leafs are still separated in terms of the length and cost of a new contract, leaving open the possibility that Tavares will hit free agency July 1. According to LeBrun, the new deals for Matt Duchene and Brock Nelson are creating a gap between what Tavares' team thinks he is worth and what Toronto is offering. Despite his age, the veteran center still racked up 38 goals and 74 points last year over 75 regular-season games and should continue to produce offensively heading into the 2025-26 campaign.
