LG Twins (40-32-1) vs Kia Tigers (38-32)

Tuesday, August 4th, 5:30 AM EDT

Projected Starters

RHP Tyler Wilson (5-5, 4.20 ERA) vs RHP Min Woo Lee (4-4, 5.19 ERA)

Game Preview

The Twins and the Tigers are both fighting for a playoff berth, and this upcoming series might be pivotal as the KBO regular season quickly approaches its stretch run. The Twins are in fourth place with a 40-32-1 record, while the Tigers are just one game behind them with a 38-32 mark. The recent form favors the Twins, though – they have gone 7-3 in their last 10 games, while the Tigers have 5-5 while dropping their past two contests. The pitching matchup for this duel features two righties in Tyler Wilson for the Twins, and Min Woo Lee for the Tigers. Wilson gets the nod when comparing the numbers, however, as he has posted a 4.20 ERA against Lee's 5.19 mark.

Dae In Hwang - 10-Day IL - Undisclosed

7/11 9:44 PM IST - Hwang went 2-for-5 with two home runs and three RBI in an 8-3 win over Kiwoom on Saturday. Kia manager Matt Williams decided to rest regular starter Min Sang Yoo for the 24-year-old Hwang, who did not disappoint. Despite hitting just four home runs before Saturday, Hwang launched homers toward opposite sides of the field to help the Tigers win. The first baseman has played only eight games since June 1, but he could see some opportunities to shine on days

Injuries

Kia Tigers

Dae In Hwang - 10-Day IL - Undisclosed

7/11 9:44 PM IST - Hwang went 2-for-5 with two home runs and three RBI in an 8-3 win over Kiwoom on Saturday. Kia manager Matt Williams decided to rest regular starter Min Sang Yoo for the 24-year-old Hwang, who did not disappoint. Despite hitting just four home runs before Saturday, Hwang launched homers toward opposite sides of the field to help the Tigers win. The first baseman has played only eight games since June 1, but he could see some opportunities to shine on days Yoo is resting.

Young Seok Jang - Out - Not Injury Related

6/8 10:29 PM IST - Jang was removed from KIA's first-team roster Monday, Ik-rae Choi of The Dong-A Ilbo reports. Jang was called up last week after spending several weeks with KIA's second team, but he is headed back down after going 1-for-11 (.091) last week. Recently-acquired Ji Hyuk Ryu is expected to take over as KIA's starting third baseman.

Joo Chan Kim - 10-Day IL - Undisclosed

6/22 11:52 PM IST - Kim was removed from the Tigers' roster on Monday, Soo Jin Park of Star News reports. It's not clear if Kim was placed on the injured list or sent to the Futures League, as he went 6-for-18 (.333) after making his season debut June 7 but received just five at-bats over the last five games. One way or another, though, the 39-year-old will not be active heading into the latest week of KBO action.

Ji Hyuk Ryu - Out - Hamstring

7/6 4:44 PM IST - Ryu (hamstring) will be re-evaluated in 2-to-3 weeks to determine a clearer timetable for his return, Su Jin Park of Star News reports. Kia will have the 26-year-old rehab and start physical training after an MRI revealed positive progress involving his injury. The team will likely look at the end of July or beginning of August for a potential return date. Ryu was traded to the Tigers from Doosan in June, playing just five games before getting injured.

LG Twins

Woo Chan Cha - 10-Day IL - Shoulder

7/25 3:32 PM IST - Cha will miss 3-to-4 weeks with pain in his left shoulder, according to chosun.com. The southpaw is scheduled for another examination Monday after LG put him on the injured list Saturday. Cha threw seven scoreless innings in his first start post-demotion, but he will now not return to action until some point in August.

Keun Woo Jeong - 10-Day IL - Quadriceps

7/11 10:39 PM IST - Jeong was placed on the injured list Saturday with a right quad injury, according to hankooki.com. It's not clear how long Jeong will be sidelined, but he will be out at least several games. Jeong has played a part-time role of late and has not seen the ball well in July, going 2-for-17 (.118) at the plate since the start of the month.

Chan Heon Jung - Out - Not Injury Related

7/30 10:15 PM IST - Jung was removed from the Twins' roster Thursday, according to Su Jin Park of Star News. Jung was not sharp his last time out, but even if he had been, he still likely would have been sent down, as the Twins are committed to using him only once every other time through the rotation. Jung's next start will come sometime in early-to-mid August.

Dae Hyun Kim - 10-Day IL - Ankle

7/23 2:03 AM IST - The Twins placed Kim on the 10-day injured list Wednesday due to an ankle issue, Sang Kyung Park of The Chosun Ilbo reports. Park has been a mainstay in the LG bullpen all season, but he hasn't been particularly effective when called upon. He's posted a 6.56 ERA and 1.80 WHIP over 23.1 innings on the campaign.

Sang Gyu Lee - Out - Not Injury Related

7/11 10:45 PM IST - Lee was removed from the Twins' roster Saturday, according to hankooki.com. Lee was brilliant to open the season, posting a 1.35 ERA and recording four saves over his first 13 appearances, but he has struggled mightily of late, allowing 13 earned runs in 7.2 innings over his last eight outings. As a result, the Twins decided to send him down to iron some things out.

Min Ho Lee - Out - Not Injury Related

7/28 2:37 AM IST - Lee was removed from the Twins' roster Monday, according to chosun.com. Lee started Sunday's game, and as has been the pattern this season he will get extra rest before making his next start, which should come sometime in early August.

Chun Woong Lee - Out - Hand

7/18 1:50 PM IST - Lee will miss 3-4 weeks with a fracture in his left hand, Won Chul Shin of SPOTV reports. The 31-year-old exited Friday's game at Seoul early after receiving one accidental pitch to the palm during an at-bat. The injury turned out worse than envisioned, as Lee will miss a few weeks recuperating from his fracture. Chang Gi Hong looks to receive more starts in the outfield until further notice.

Yong Taik Park - Out - Hamstring

6/24 2:15 PM IST - Park will miss four weeks with a right hamstring injury, Se Ho Yoon of Sports Seoul reports. The news comes as no surprise, considering the 19-year LG vet struggled to exit Tuesday's game with Kiwoom under his own power. Park now joins Eun Sung Chae (ankle) and Min Sung Kim (thigh) on the list of starting position players out for the injury-riddled Twins. As a result of Park's injury, 20-year-old prospect Jae Won Lee was summoned to the first team and will start Wednesday.

Top Picks

Eun Sung Chae, Twins: Chae has been the hottest bat in the KBO over the last few weeks. Since returning to the first team on July 28, the veteran outfielder has gone 11-for-25 with two homers and 16 RBI, as well as posting a 1.142 OPS. That's enough reason to give him a captaincy role in this matchup.

Roberto Ramos, Twins: Ramos has recorded five hits in nine at-bats against the Tigers in 2020, including one home run and two RBI. The slugging first baseman has been one of the top offensive forces in the league this season and is among the league leaders in the home run department with 19. He sits second in the league in that category.

Min Sang Yoo, Tigers: Preston Tucker has struggled against the Twins in 2020 and Sun Bin Kim is coming off an injury, but Min Sang Yoo has had good numbers against LG in the current term. He has gone 5-for-8 with two RBI against them.

Kang Nam Yoo, Twins: Yoo has been the Twins starting catcher all season long and while this position isn't a great source for offense, Yoo has found regular success against the Tigers this season. He has gone 5-for-8 with two RBI against them in 2020.
