Quickly taps in Phoenix
FlyweightUFC
May 7, 2022
Schnell lost to Brandon Royval via submission (guillotine choke) at 2:14 of Round 1 at UFC 274 on Saturday in Phoenix.
ANALYSIS
It's a crushing defeat for Schnell and it came in arguably the worst possible fashion. Schnell -- typically a pure mat specialist -- was able to drop Royval with some solid work on the feet before working for a guillotine choke. Royval was able to roll through it and clamp on a guillotine choke of his own, which made Schnell tap in short order. Schnell has been wildly inconsistent during his time with the UFC, sporting a 5-4 (1NC) mark in his first ten bouts with the company, but he clearly has more ability than that record would lead you to believe. Schnell turned 32 years of age this past January, so now it the time for him to make a move. In the meantime, he'll at least take home $50,000 after this back-and-forth affair was given Fight of the Night honors.

New Perez date set
FlyweightUFC
January 18, 2022
Schnell's scheduled flyweight matchup against Alex Perez has been moved to UFC 271 on Feb. 12, Marcel Dorff of Eurosport Nederland reports.
ANALYSIS
Schnell originally agreed to step in on short notice and face Perez last summer, but the date ended up getting pushed back twice and eventually landed at UFC 269 in December. Schnell ended up having to pull out due to an unspecified medical issue. Now on the fifth booking of this proposed matchup, Schnell finds himself as a sizable betting underdog of roughly (+270) against the former title contender. While Schnell has height and reach advantages, Perez has faced far superior competition, in addition to edges in striking and takedown volume. Schnell will have to stay on his feet to have a chance, though he defends takedowns at only a 50 percent clip.

Whether or not Schnell and Perez will be matched against each other yet again sometime soon remains to be seen .
