Ryan Spann

Will fight on September 19
Light HeavyweightUFC
July 26, 2020
Spann will take on Johnny Walker in a light heavyweight fight set for Sept. 19 at UFC 253, which will be held in a yet-to-be-determined location, Brett Okamoto of ESPN reports.
Spann was handed a 180-day medical suspension after his win in early-May over Sam Alvey, but it appears he's been cleared from any injury he picked up in that fight. The 28-year-old is a perfect 4-0-0 since joining the UFC in 2018 and will now get what's perceived to be a step up in competition with Walker. Walker took the UFC by storm with a 3-0 start to his career that featured exclusively first-round stoppages, but has crumbled against superior competition, losing back-to-back fights. This will be a perfect litmus test for Spann, who could make a case for a spot in the rankings with his fifth company win. Walker has height and reach advantages, plus lands a higher striking volume. Spann is more effective with the takedown, when employed, and has also absorbed slightly less punishment in his UFC run.

Hit with medical suspension

May 11, 2020
Spann was handed a 180-day medical suspension Monday, MMAJunkie.com reports.
The nature of Spann's injury was not revealed. He won his fourth straight fight in a split-decision victory over Sam Alvey on Saturday, but he evidently took enough of a beating that he won't be fighting again until November unless cleared by a physician.
Barely hangs on in UFC 249 win
Light HeavyweightUFC
May 9, 2020
Spann defeated Sam Alvey via split decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28) at UFC 249 on Saturday in Jacksonville.
It was an underwhelming performance from Spann and one in which he was fortunate to emerge victorious. It started well for the man who entered as the biggest favorite on the entire card at (-380). He scored a pair of immediate takedowns on Alvey, although Spann did nothing with his positional advantage. He also clamped on a deep arm triangle in Round 2, which at one point appeared might end the bout. Alvey somehow survived and Spann tired as the fight progressed. He allowed Alvey to connect with several short power shots in the finale frame. Spann very well may have lost if there had been just a bit more time on the clock. Spann is very tall (6-foot-5) and long for the light heavyweight division, but his cardio is poor and his technique is questionable. A product of Dana White's Contender Series, Spann is somehow 4-0 in his first four official fights with the company, but he hasn't fought as well as his record would indicate.

Spann will now take on Sam Alvey in a light heavyweight matchup at UFC 249 on May 9 in Jacksonville.
This is a fight originally scheduled for London in late-March and again for the original UFC 249 on April 18, but both events were ultimately cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, Spann has a massive opportunity to showcase his skills on the very first fight of the return of mainstream combat sports. He's again a big betting favorite, sitting at approximately (-400) for the matchup.

Spann has officially been confirmed to take on Sam Alvey at UFC 249 on May 9.
Spann was originally expected to take on Paul Craig last month at UFC London before COVID-19 concerns ultimately canceled the entire card. He will now get another chance to continue the hot start he has had to his career, albeit against a different opponent in Alvey. The 28-year-old has kicked off his UFC career with three consecutive victories.

December 19, 2019
Spann will take on Paul Craig in a light heavyweight matchup at UFC London on March 21.
Spann has started out his UFC career with three consecutive victories, and has earned stoppages within two rounds in each of his last two fights. He'll take on an older fighter that is 4-4-1 with the company, most recently fighting Shogun Rua to a draw in Brazil. Spann will enter with two-inch height and three-inch reach advantages, and while it's a small sample size, he also sports superior marks in terms of striking volume and striking defense.
