Ryan Spann

Taps in first ever main event

Spann lost to Anthony Smith via submission (rear-naked choke) at 3:47 of Round 1 at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Las Vegas.
Spann appeared anxious and out of sorts in his first UFC main event. He was running all over the place with complete disregard for Smith's power and ate a handful of massive shots as a result. Spann immediately tapped out to the rear-naked choke that ended the bout, as he realized Smith had it totally locked in and there was nowhere for him to go. Spann is athletic, very good on the mat, and tall (6-foot-5) for the light heavyweight division, but he has less power than your typical 205-pounder and zero history of performing against better competition. The 30-year-old has enough raw talent to get past the vast majority of the guys in the division, but it's a stretch to label Spann any sort of contender. His UFC victories have come against Misha Cirkunov, Sam Alvey, Devin Clark, Big Nog and Luis Henrique. It's not exactly a murderers row of competition.

Scores huge KO in Vegas

Spann defeated Misha Cirkunov via TKO (punches) at 1:11 of Round 1 at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Las Vegas.
A quick knockout from Spann is the latest in a long line of unexpected finishes on this card. Spann had four knockouts in his pro career prior to Saturday, but he's generally known as a submission specialist due to his long 6-foot-5 frame. Those ground skills were unnecessary in this one as he popped an overwhelmed Cirkunov countless times before the action was finally stopped by referee Mark Smith just 71 seconds in. Honestly, this result likely says more about where Cirkunov is at than Spann at this point, but it was impressive nonetheless. It hasn't always been pretty, but Spann is now 5-1 in his first half dozen UFC bouts.
Cirkunov clash rebooked for March 13

Spann will square off against Misha Cirkunov (undisclosed) on the UFC's March 13 card, Marcel Dorff of MMADNA reports.
Spann and Cirkunov were originally scheduled to collide in mid-December, but an undisclosed injury for Cirkunov forced it to be pushed back a few months. It appears the two are set on a new date, as Spann looks to rebound from his second loss in the UFC, which came at the hands of Jimy Walker via a first-round knockout. Given that the two have each seen more than half of their UFC bouts end before the first-round bell, this one has a good chance to be over in a flash.
