Falls after missing weight
August 15, 2020
Burns lost to Daniel Pineda via TKO (punches) at 4:37 of Round 2 at UFC 252 on Saturday in Las Vegas.
What a disaster. Burns missed weight by 3.5 pounds on Friday, still entered as a -240 favorite and was soundly defeated by a guy who hadn't fought in the UFC in well over six years. This was a winnable fight, but Burns quickly gassed out and that left Pineda the opening to essentially lay on top of him and land uncontested punches that forced referee Mark Smith to call off the bout. Burns appeared to be a potential dark horse contender at 145 pounds following back-to-back stoppage wins over Evan Dunham and Nate Landwehr to begin his UFC run, and then this happened. The 32-year-old Brazilian mat specialist needs a rebound performance his next time out.
Misses weight at UFC 252
August 14, 2020
Burns came in 3.5 pounds over the featherweight limit for his clash versus Daniel Pineda at UFC 252, Ariel Helwani of ESPN reports.
Burns' opponent, Pineda, has already weighed in at the necessary mark, so Burns will likely need for forfeit a chunk of his pay for the bout in order for it to continue. Assuming the fight continues as scheduled, Burns is considered one of the heavier favorites on the card to pick up a win.
Added to UFC 252 card
August 1, 2020
Burns is set to fight Daniel Pineda at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas on Aug. 15, Guilherme Cruz of MMA Fighting reports.
Burns has won five consecutive fights and is fresh off a first-round submission victory over Evan Dunham at UFC 250 in early June. He figures to be the favorite over Pineda who just recently signed a new contract with UFC after leaving the promotion back in 2014.
Submission win in 80 seconds
June 6, 2020
Burns defeated Evan Dunham via submission (rear-naked choke) at 1:20 of Round 1 at UFC 250 on Saturday in Las Vegas.
It's the second dominant performance from a member of the Burns family in a week. After his older brother Gilbert rolled over Tyron Woodley in a main event spot seven days ago, Herbert went out and dispatched a helplessly overmatched Dunham in less than 90 seconds Saturday. We will have to see how Burns looks once he starts going up against some better competition, but he has now stopped his first two UFC opponents (Dunham, Nate Landwehr) in a combined 4:03. There may very well be some serious future potential here.
Dunham on tap at UFC 250
May 29, 2020
Burns and Evan Dunham agreed to a catchweight bout of 150 pounds at UFC 250 June 6 in Las Vegas, Guilherme Cruz of MMAFighting.com reports.
Burns made his UFC debut at UFC Raleigh in late January and took down Nate Landwehr via KO (knee) at 2:43 of Round 1. Dunham came out of retirement to fight Michael Johnson in late April at UFC Lincoln, but Johnson was moved to a different event and the Lincoln card was canceled due to the pandemic.
