Earns first UFC victory
July 10, 2021
Zhumagulov defeated Jerome Rivera via submission (guillotine choke) at 2:02 of Round 1 at UFC 264 on Saturday in Las Vegas.
Zhumagulov left no doubt who was the better man in a fight between two guys who began the evening searching for their first UFC victory. Zhumagulov negated what was a massive height and reach edge for Rivera by simply grabbing his opponent along the cage and clamping on a standing guillotine choke that ended the fight. It was such a nice submission that it's difficult to believe it was the first of Zhumagulov's pro career. The 32-year-old Kazakhstan native began his UFC run with back-to-back defeats and this victory likely saved his job.
Fighting Rivera at UFC 264
March 24, 2021
Zhumagulov will fight Jerome Rivera at UFC 264 on July 10, MMA DNA reports.
Zhumagulov will look to capture his first UFC victory in this one after recently losing to Amir Albazi via unanimous decision at UFC 257 on Jan. 23. Similarly, Rivera is still looking for his first UFC win as well, as the flyweight was most recently defeated by Ode Osbourne at UFC Fight Night on Feb. 6.
Still searching for first UFC win
January 23, 2021
Zhumagulov lost to Amir Albazi via unanimous decision (28-29, 28-29, 28-29) at UFC 257 on Saturday in Abu Dhabi.
Still in search of his first UFC victory, Zhumagulov looked fine for about a round before Albazi regained the momentum. Zhumagulov's strong start was the result of some excellent striking defense, as Albazi landed just 24 percent of his significant strikes (14-of-58) in Round 1. Zhumagulov became increasing less effective in that area as the fight progressed en route to the unanimous decision defeat. Zhumagulov has victories over current UFC fighter Tyson Nam and long time company mainstay Ali Bagautinov on his resume, but he doesn't have a knockout win in nearly four years, and there is no guarantee he will receive a third opportunity with the company after suffering defeats in each of his first two bouts.
Albazi fight rebooked for UFC 257
November 25, 2020
Zhumagulov (13-4-0) is now scheduled to face Amir Albazi (13-1-0) in a flyweight fight Jan. 23 at UFC 257, Marcel Dorff of MMADNA.nl reports.
The two flyweights were originally scheduled to fight this weekend at the UFC's event in Las Vegas, but the bout ended up being postponed. Zhumagulov and Albazi were able to quickly reach agreement on a new fight date approximately two months later, giving both fighters some extra time to prepare for the matchup.
Saturday's fight to be rescheduled
November 24, 2020
Zhumagulov's matchup against Amir Albazi on Saturday will be rescheduled for a later day, Nolan King of USA Today reports.
It's currently unclear as the why the fight has been called off, as Zhumagulov was supposed to battle Albazi at UFC 15 this weekend. For now, the matchup will likely be rescheduled to a future date. Zhumagulov holds at the moment a 13-4-0 UFC fighting record.
