Still searching for first UFC win
January 23, 2021
Zhumagulov lost to Amir Albazi via unanimous decision (28-29, 28-29, 28-29) at UFC 257 on Saturday in Abu Dhabi.
Still in search of his first UFC victory, Zhumagulov looked fine for about a round before Albazi regained the momentum. Zhumagulov's strong start was the result of some excellent striking defense, as Albazi landed just 24 percent of his significant strikes (14-of-58) in Round 1. Zhumagulov became increasing less effective in that area as the fight progressed en route to the unanimous decision defeat. Zhumagulov has victories over current UFC fighter Tyson Nam and long time company mainstay Ali Bagautinov on his resume, but he doesn't have a knockout win in nearly four years, and there is no guarantee he will receive a third opportunity with the company after suffering defeats in each of his first two bouts.
Albazi fight rebooked for UFC 257
November 25, 2020
Zhumagulov (13-4-0) is now scheduled to face Amir Albazi (13-1-0) in a flyweight fight Jan. 23 at UFC 257, Marcel Dorff of MMADNA.nl reports.
The two flyweights were originally scheduled to fight this weekend at the UFC's event in Las Vegas, but the bout ended up being postponed. Zhumagulov and Albazi were able to quickly reach agreement on a new fight date approximately two months later, giving both fighters some extra time to prepare for the matchup.
Saturday's fight to be rescheduled
November 24, 2020
Zhumagulov's matchup against Amir Albazi on Saturday will be rescheduled for a later day, Nolan King of USA Today reports.
It's currently unclear as the why the fight has been called off, as Zhumagulov was supposed to battle Albazi at UFC 15 this weekend. For now, the matchup will likely be rescheduled to a future date. Zhumagulov holds at the moment a 13-4-0 UFC fighting record.
Set for Nov. 28 clash
October 16, 2020
Zhumagulov will fight Amir Albazi on the UFC's Nov. 28 card, Marcel Dorff of MMADNA reports.
Zhumagulov lost his debut versus Raulian Paiva in a tight unanimous decision in mid-July but will get another chance to get back into the Octagon in late November. He will now take on Albazi, who was originally scheduled to face Paiva before Paiva reportedly suffered a torn ACL.
Drops tight one in UFC debut
July 11, 2020
Zhumagulov lost to Raulian Paiva via unanimous decision (28-29, 28-29, 28-29) at UFC 251 on Saturday in Abu Dhabi.
Zhumagulov might have a beef here. He started slowly in his UFC debut before picking up the pace over the final ten minutes. Zhumagulov attempted to lean on his wrestling but managed to land just 2-of-11 takedown attempts. He also did little with the positional advantage in the rare instances in which he was successful. Still, judges generally tend to score a fight in favor of the man who finishes strongly and that was clearly the newcomer. It was a quality effort despite the setback for the 31-year-old. At least he is walking away with 20 percent of Paiva's purse after Paiva missed weight by three pounds on Friday.
