Routed by Montel Jackson
September 18, 2021
Buys lost to Montel Jackson via unanimous decision (27-30, 27-30, 27-30) at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Las Vegas.
Stepping in on short notice for Danaa Batgerel who was forced to withdraw due to visa issues, Buys hung around for about a round before the roof caved in. He actually had Jackson in trouble a couple times in the first frame with a pair of deep submission attempts, but Jackson managed to hang on a Buys was dominated on the feet the rest of the way. Buys showed his toughness in seeing the final bell, no small feat considering he was knocked down on four separate occasions throughout the course of the bout. Buys' has now been dominated in each of his first two UFC bouts and likely needs a win his next time out in order to save his job.

Steps in to face Jackson
August 25, 2021
Buys will move up to bantamweight to take on Montel Jackson at the UFC event scheduled for Sept. 18, Marcel Dorff of MMADNA reports.
Buys will step in on relatively short notice to take the place of Danaa Batgerel, who was forced to withdraw from the fight due to visa issues. Buys earned his opportunity with the company after a submission victory on Dana White's Contender Series, but proceeded to lose his debut to Bruno Silva via second-round knockout in March. His striking defense was atrocious in that matchup, as he was knocked down three times by Silva before eventually getting finished. Jackson is no easy task, as he's won four of his last five fights with two first-round stoppages.

Booked for May bout

Buys will fight Francisco Figueiredo on May 8, Marcel Dorff of MMADNA reports.
Buys will enter the Octagon in place of Jimmy Flick, who announced his retirement Saturday. The 31-year-old Buys is trying to get back on track after losing his UFC debut via TKO to Bruno Silva in March. Figueiredo had better fortune in his UFC debut back in January, as he defeated Jerome Rivera via unanimous decision.
Loses to Bruno Silva
March 20, 2021
Buys lost to Bruno Silva via TKO (punch) at 2:56 in Round 2 at UFC Vegas 22 on Saturday.
Buys struggled to get into a rhythm for the beginning of the fight. Silva has had a noticeable speed advantage that helped him win the aggregate of the striking exchanges. Buys also fell to his back twice in each round and surrender some top control time to the more experienced Silva. Buys did not have as good a showing in this performance as he previously did, perhaps because it was his UFC debut. The experience, speed and grappling of Silva proved to be too much for Buys.
Set for UFC debut
February 12, 2021
Buys will make his UFC debut against Bruno Silva on March 20, Marcel Dorff of MMADNA reports.
Buys will be making his promotional debut on the same card as his wife, Cheyanne Buys, who will be debuting against Kay Hansen. JP enters the fight with a 9-2 record as a professional, winning five straight before earning his UFC contract. In Silva, he'll face an opponent who's winless (with one no-contest) in three UFC fights.
