Booked for May bout
April 12, 2021
Buys will fight Francisco Figueiredo on May 8, Marcel Dorff of MMADNA reports.
Buys will enter the Octagon in place of Jimmy Flick, who announced his retirement Saturday. The 31-year-old Buys is trying to get back on track after losing his UFC debut via TKO to Bruno Silva in March. Figueiredo had better fortune in his UFC debut back in January, as he defeated Jerome Rivera via unanimous decision.
Loses to Bruno Silva
March 20, 2021
Buys lost to Bruno Silva via TKO (punch) at 2:56 in Round 2 at UFC Vegas 22 on Saturday.
Buys struggled to get into a rhythm for the beginning of the fight. Silva has had a noticeable speed advantage that helped him win the aggregate of the striking exchanges. Buys also fell to his back twice in each round and surrender some top control time to the more experienced Silva. Buys did not have as good a showing in this performance as he previously did, perhaps because it was his UFC debut. The experience, speed and grappling of Silva proved to be too much for Buys.
Set for UFC debut
February 12, 2021
Buys will make his UFC debut against Bruno Silva on March 20, Marcel Dorff of MMADNA reports.
Buys will be making his promotional debut on the same card as his wife, Cheyanne Buys, who will be debuting against Kay Hansen. JP enters the fight with a 9-2 record as a professional, winning five straight before earning his UFC contract. In Silva, he'll face an opponent who's winless (with one no-contest) in three UFC fights.
Signed despite controversial finish
November 17, 2020
Buys defeated Jacob Silva via technical submission (guillotine choke) at 4:54 of Round 1 at Dana White's Tuesday Night Contender Series. After the show, he was one of four fighters awarded an official UFC contract.
While Buys only had a few minutes to impress the boss, he was able to achieve that goal by showing off multiple slick transitions on the mat. He nearly had a arm-triangle choke locked in, but Silva miraculously found enough space to escape. The controversy kicked in when referee Marc Goddard stopped the fight with just six seconds left in the round, as he appeared to be under the impression that Silva had been put to sleep. Silva immediately bounced back up to protest the stoppage, but the proceedings had already been ended. Still, Buys can't be faulted for what looked like an error. With one of just two finishes on the night, it was more than enough to earn the contract. The 24-year-old flyweight has now won five in a row via stoppage en route to his eventual UFC debut.
