Tatsuro Taira

Strong showing in UFC debut
May 14, 2022
Taira defeated Carlos Candelario via unanimous decision (30-26, 30-27, 30-27) at UFC on ESPN 36 on Saturday in Las Vegas.
It was an extremely successful UFC debut for the 22-year-old Taira. Going up against an opponent who missed weight by half a pound Friday morning, Taira was in control pretty much the entire way outside of a deep guillotine attempt from Candelario early in Round 3. Taira handled the pressure well and showed excellent mat awareness to escape from the choke. Taira is so young that all that matters at this point is that he stays healthy and gets regular reps inside the Octagon. The UFC would be wise to take it slow with him, as we have seen talented young fighters in the past (Sage Northcutt, Paige VanZant, etc..) pushed too quickly and suffer as a result.
