ANALYSIS
Upwards of a -700 favorite against a late-notice opponent, Basharat had to fight tooth-and-nail to avoid his first professional defeat. As usual, he leaned on his wrestling game for success. Farid fired off a ridiculous 22 takedown attempts, five of which landed. But it was his repeated low kicks which won him the fight. Garza -- who is 23 years old and entered with all of seven pro bouts under his belt -- pushed the pace throughout, but the low kicks slowed him down just enough in Round 3 for Basharat to secure the win. It's impossible to argue with the results given Farid is 16-0 as a professional and 7-0 with the UFC, but six of those seven wins have come via decision. Sooner or later he's going to have to generate some more damaging offense.

Basharat was the cleaner, crisper striker and did most of the damage in the rare instances in which the two fought at distance. Matsumoto primarily leaned on his wrestling game, landing seven takedowns on 11 attempts. To Basharat's credit, he didn't absorb much damage from the bottom and landed two well-timed takedowns of his own. This was a 50/50 decision, and sometimes you just need luck on your side. Perfect in six UFC bouts, the fact Basharat isn't even ranked tells you all you need to know about the insane depth of the bantamweight division.
