Nets contract after grueling fight
Amil defeated Emrah Sonmez via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28) at Dana White's Tuesday Night Contender Series. After the show, he was one of five fighters to be awarded an official UFC contract.
ANALYSIS
It may have been a victory, but one could be forgiven for thinking this wouldn't have been considered a contract-worthy performance in the past. Sonmez (who missed weight by one pound) was able to use his wrestling and scrambling ability to mute the offense of the California native for most of the fight, but the judges decided that the strikes Amil landed in the interim (including a knockdown in the first round) were enough to warrant the win. He wasn't able to show much here, but Amil is a slick boxer who hits hard. That he was able to consistently keep up with the scrambling of Sonmez makes him interesting as a competitor who won't be overwhelmed by those who want to take him down.
