Late surge is not enough
Castaneda lost to Chris Gutierrez via split decision (28-29, 29-28, 28-29) at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Kansas City.
ANALYSIS
Castaneda is going to watch this fight back and wonder what the heck he was doing. The first ten minutes were fairly uneventful outside of a Round 1 Gutierrez knockdown which wasn't all that damaging. Castaneda didn't attempt a single takedown until Round 3, at which point he got it with ease and easily won the frame. Unfortunately for him, two of the three judges gave each of the first two rounds to Gutierrez, leading to the defeat. Castaneda needs to use aggressiveness and grappling if he's to have any prolonged success. He's just 3-3 in his last six bouts dating back to February 2022.

Taking on Gutierrez in March
Castaneda will fight Chris Gutierrez at UFC 313 in Las Vegas on March 8, per Marcel Dorff of Eurosport.nl.
ANALYSIS
Castaneda will look to bounce back from his most recent defeat at the hands of Daniel Marcos in June. The 33-year-old American will take a reach advantage into the fight, though Gutierrez will carry an advantage in height. Castaneda will likely be looking to use the ground game against the fellow Texan, as he boasts a perfect 7-0 professional record in submission finishes. He will have to remain weary of his opponent's stopping power, however, as Gutierrez holds a perfect 9-0 professional record in KO/TKO finishes.
