Gomez (Achilles) featured for 20 minutes in Friday's 4-2 victory against Bournemouth in the season opener but can't yet play half an hour at that level of competition, coach Arne Slot said in a press conference. "With Joe Gomez only training twice, I didn't feel he could already play half [an hour] in this intensity, so I started off with Wata [Endo] in that position, knowing that I could always bring Joe maybe later on for 10, 15, 20 minutes."

Gomez made his return from his Achilles injury in Friday's season opener against the Cherries but still doesn't have half an hour in his legs at that level of competition. The defender will likely gradually build his fitness back in the coming games before being able to handle a larger amount of minutes. That said, he is the third choice center back behind Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate, therefore his playing minutes will still be limited moving forward.
