Denis Shapovalov
22-Year-Old
Reaches first major semifinal
July 7, 2021
Shapovalov won 6-4, 3-6, 5-7, 6-1, 6-4 over Karen Khachanov in the quarterfinals of Wimbledon on Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Shapovalov overpowered his opponent once again, ripping 59 winners compared to 31 from the Russian to rally from behind and reach the first slam semifinal of his career after three hours and 26 minutes. The 22-year-old Canadian did hit 10 double faults, and 48 unforced errors in total, as a result of his offensive style. Shapovalov will likely need to play an even cleaner match when he takes on No. 1 seed Novak Djokovic in the semifinals, who he has an 0-6 record against.
