2024 Fantasy Outlook
Stassi didn't get a chance to play in 2023, as he dealt with a hip injury and also was away from the Angels while dealing with a family issue. The backstop was dealt to the White Sox in December, and he'll have a chance to win a spot as the backup catcher with a good showing in the Cactus League. While Stassi does have a quality approach at the plate and rarely swings at pitches outside of the strike zone as seen in his 21.1 percent chase rate in 2022, he doesn't make enough hard contact to hit for a high average, and he doesn't have enough power to compensate. Stassi will provide some real-life value if he does make the White Sox, but it won't translate into anything meaningful in regards to fantasy leagues. Read Past Outlooks
Opts for season-ending surgery
The White Sox announced that Stassi underwent a season-ending left hip surfacing procedure Friday in New York City.
ANALYSIS
After missing the entire 2023 season while he was a member of the Angels due to a hip injury in addition to a family medical issue, Stassi will now go another full season without logging any big-league action. The veteran catcher was able to make five rehab appearances at Triple-A Charlotte in April but had been shut down ever since due to a hip injury that apparently wasn't improving after nearly two months of rest. The White Sox hold a $7.5 million team option on Stassi for the 2025 season that the club will almost certainly decline this winter, if he isn't cut loose before then.

In his 10th season as a big-leaguer, Stassi was as close to being the top option behind the plate in 2022 as he's ever been, logging career highs with 102 games and 375 plate appearances. However, after two strong campaigns to get to that point, the veteran cratered as a hitter, posting a 63 wRC+ and recording a 29.9% strikeout rate. Stassi still has two years left on his contract and has likely earned some grace due to the strong start to his tenure as an Angel. Kurt Suzuki, whom Stassi had become accustomed to sharing time with, announced his plans to retire following the 2022 campaign, but a more imposing threat to Stassi's playing time looms in Logan O'Hoppe, whom Los Angeles acquired from the Phillies last season. O'Hoppe crushed Double-A pitching -- especially after joining the Angels organization -- and held his own during a brief cup of coffee with the big club. Odds are that Stassi will open 2023 as the team's primary catcher, but O'Hoppe is waiting in the wings and could win the Opening Day nod with a strong spring training.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Amid ghastly slump
Stassi has recorded just three hits in his last 17 starts and his batting average has dropped to .184.
ANALYSIS
Stassi is 3-for-58 with one homer and 20 strikeouts since Aug. 10, producing a .052/.141/.103 slash line during that span. He's still managed to start more than half of the Angels' games behind the plate during that time but is mostly hitting eighth or ninth in the lineup of late. Following a productive 2021 where he posted a .752 OPS and hit 13 homers, the Angels signed Stassi to a three-year, $17.5 million contract, covering his last two years of arbitration and first year of free agency. That contract looks regrettable now and the team will hope he finds his way at the plate for the final two years of the deal.
